Unhappy Eats alot of gas...(70mi per 1/4 tank)

Well I have a gen3 4cyl camry with a half ass exhaust system (half stock pipes/ half new larger pipes in about 3 months ago) with a custom downpipe (been there for like 2 years). I dont drive this car above 4000rpm very much.....since its an auto it shifts before that during regular acceleration but it doesnt shift til like 5000rpm if the gas was floored (i dont do this much). Anyways i've set up a trip meter for the gas usage....and it seems to me that i'm only gett an average of 70miles per quarter tank! Thats under 20miles per gallon!!! What do you think the problem is? BTW i usually only drive on highways....mostly around 60-70mph at around 2500rpm, only time that the engine is being worked is during acceleration (long and loud process ) Anyway suggestions about my gas usage?

Cool

Plugs, air filter, fuel filter, clean injectors.
Just the normal stuff...

And don't measure by what the gas gauge says. They're all inaccurate, some to a high degree. Set the trip odometer and divide that by how much gas you put in the car when you fill up.

70x 4 = 280 for a full tank.

I get about 315 full tank. But i'm always under 2,000 rpm on street driving and 80mph on highway at 3,100rpm. New plugs and maybe wires, air filters help. When you say 1/2 ass job on exhaust what do you mean? Maybe you dont have enough backpressure and stuff. Maybe exhaust leaks are hurting your car.

Cool

I know when I was installing my piggyback the ECU had tripped into ultra limp mode and I got 50 miles per 1/2 tank of gas. You don't have any major problems like that right?

The mileage on my '97 4cyl Camry took a turn for the worse at around 100K. I cleaned the intake/injectors with a dose of Seafoam, new plugs NGK stock, etc. Then I noticed my temp needle fluctuating, running colder during highway driving and more normal in town. I replaced my thermostat (should have done it when I had it all apart for the timing belt/water pump replacement). Anyway, the mileage is back to normal. I'll bet all of the items helped, but I wonder if the real culprit was the thermostat, cold engines burn more gas.

Just my $.02
