hey...i have a 1998 toyota camry 2.2 l 4 cyl...5sfe i guess
i have been seeing things about rev limiters but i have no idea what they are...does is affect my trottle response, top speed, etc??? i have searched and all that has done is confuse me more...can someone help? also, is there a way to remove it????
For starters, it doesn't effect any other system in the car. It only works when you hit..redline.
Second, don't remove it. You risk damage to your engine, that is unneccessary. There is NO power at that RPM range (above 6000 and beyond) so why remove it? Unless you've got a modified motor which produces it's power at these engine speeds...
Different types work in different ways, but I believe the Camry uses a spark cut type.
Basically what that does is, when you get your RPM to redline (i'm not sure what the 5SFE is..6200??) the ECU purposely cuts spark to some cylinders, which stops the engine from increasing its speed any furthur.

ok cool thanks...imi kinda confused though bc today i was going on a long open road...flat...and long...i got up to only 95 decently quickly and then my car just kinda went dull...it didnt like jolt but i wouldnt think it would get cut off that fast...any ideas???
May be a few things. Chances are the wind resistance by that point was hindering your car's acceleration. Also, though, some cars have a speed limiter instead of a rev limiter. Not positive on your application. The different kinds of limiters/governors can either be hard (sudden jerk and speed loss) or soft (speed simply does not increase any further). Hope this helps somewhat.
i've purposely tried to max my 99 camry 4cyl a/t ... with with o/d off ... tat means 3rd gear ... at rev limit @ 6200 ... speed was 185km/h ~ and i went a lil higher with o/d ~ so i dunno y u wanna remove the rev limiter ... the stock camry has no power for u to redline with o/d :P well ... maybe there is but ... so far there's no road for me to do so yet
the rev limiter is there for a reason, as people said previously, you'll run the risk of seriously damaging your car if you somehow manage to disable it. I have no idea how you'd take it off, but i know that it isn't the smartest thing to do.
The speed and rev limiter would be part of the ECU. Rev limiter is definitely a good thing in my opinion. Speed limiter...I'd be willing to bet your car is limited by air drag. If not, that is also regulated by the ECU.
Most Toyota's have both.
They limit RPM with an RPM limiter
They use wheel speed sensor's to detect speed
All that needs to be done to defeat either is to intercept the signal, and reproduce whatever signal you want.
The RPM limit can be fooled, but it is counter-productive and just a stupid idea
The wheel speed sensors signal can be frozen with no ill-effect, if done at a high speed. (above the last gear change speed)
Depending on the car there is a pickup on the transmission which also sends a speed signal to the ECU.

No. There are a few piggybacks that can deal with it...
Besides unless you're planning on making insanely large amounts of power. (more than 450cc injectors) What reason is there for a standalone? You've just made things many times more complex for yourself, and eliminated all of the beautiful tuning of the motors. (the ability to deal with an unlimited variaty of conditions)
