Australia Tacho Question

Hey guys...

I'm new to Toyota Nation, and from Australia.. i currently been given a 1993 SDV10 Toyota Camry Executive (Gen III i think?)... since dad ya'know... got a Camry Gen 5.5 Sportivo V6 (1MZ) . And yeah...When it came out stock, the assessories were pretty ****, and yeah since i got it off my parents...i've upgraded the sound system, the seats...and know i would like to swap the instument cluster for a new one..

The camry's a 5 speed manual and with that kinda tranny..i would like to have that aesthic feelin of knowing the amount of rev's i'm gettin out of tha machine...so i was wondering if i could swap the boring old factory (note: which did not have a tacho)...with a tacho version from a different camry..from a higher grade model.

Is there more wiring involved to the harness, or can i just plug and play?

Please help...kinda gettin bored staring at the fuel/thermo gauge ...want some fun in drivin

Any suggestions would be greatful

Thanks

hey there
yay another aussie here

with getting a Tacho into your Gen3, its really hard to tell if you can do that or not.....
your best bet is to take apart the dash and take a look behind the cluster, and see if you have an extra plug....
i had a Gen3 like your one, but it was the CSi model, so it had the Tacho already
that type of gauge had 4 plugs (fuel, temp, tacho, speed), for your one, there might only be 3 plugs (fuel, temp, speed), so you can hope there is a spare one sitting there for the Tacho

i pretty much took apart my Gen3 when i had it, so i found out what wiring was present and what wasnt......
in the way of accessories, im pretty sure for your model, you will have wiring for a Digital Clock and Glove Box Light. I found these both out and they were both plug and play

good luck with everything

Yeh jus get an aftermarket one from Apexi or something JDM (not a fan of the Autometer monster tacho's, too fooly sik), any shop that sells them will be able to advise you on how to install one if you dun want them to do it

See if you can find one first from a Csi or something. Making it look neat and integrated is always cool. If your Camry doesn't have the wiring harness, then maybe try going for an aftermarket one like Wibbit said. Apexi is just one of many brands that make good tacho's. I am agreeing with Wibbit though, steer away from the 'Monster' Autometer ones...way to 'drag racey' for a Camry.
Welcome to TN, fellow Aussie.

Thanks guys =)

i'll pull out the crappy instrument cluster and see if it has a spare plug for the tacho...

Sorry if this seems like another stupid question...but if i were to get an aftermarket tacho put in...what kinda work is involved for the whole wiring to the meter?

Cheers and nice to meet you all from Australia

Theres not too much envolved. Maybe..4 wires or so. One will have to run to the ignitor/distrubtor area. Not sure exactly which wire tho. Mine's coz a tacho..and hence a tacho wire..so i just use that. It would probly also have lighting (+ & 0) and maybe power/accessory wire. Just use piggyback plugs to connect it to the existing wiring.

Hope that helps.

Cool

Of the four wires on his 3vz-fe distributor, you use the black one. That's the NE pickup for the ECU. The other three wires comming from the distributor are G1, G2, and G-. G1 is top dead center for piston 1, G2 is TDC for piston 6, and I forget what, exactly, the G- signal is for.

Cool

Incase anyone ever needs to calibrate anything.

NE signal for a 3vz-fe is a:
1 mising tooth signal
24 teeth
8 teeth per firing
