O2 Oxygen Sensor Troubleshooting

I've been trying to troubleshoot my O2 sensor for the longest and still run into the same problem. Hopefully someone can shine some light to what may be the problem.

I got a CEL for P0171 (system too lean bank 1) so I changed my MAF (or whatevers connecting to my intake) so far.

I recently purchased a downstream o2 sensor OEM and after i installed it, I checked the voltages and it went from OPEN LOOP to CLOSED LOOP as said in the Haynes booklett for normal operations.

As for my upstream, it won't go past 0.1-0.2v which means it's always in open loop! I got a new sensor from the dealer and the connector wouldn't fit, but i compared it with my previous o2 sensor and it appears like the wires are the same. So what I did was just shave off the connector to make it fit. It still stays in open loop.

I tried using my old downstream and shaved that to make it fit but still won't work.

Could it be that they gave me the wrong o2 sensor for another camry model? Because I know they mess up on part #s a lot.

Wow I typed too much i'll just end it here.

I you had to modify the connector, they gave you the wrong sensor. You should have 2 upstream and 1 downstream. The upstream part number for a cali car is something like this 89467-XXXXX. Hope that helps.

That sparks another question. I know for sure I have a downstream because I just changed it. And I know there's one connected to my header, the one you see right in front of you when you pop the hood. So where's the 3rd one?

ok, lets start over, how many o2 readings do you have on the scanner?

I have the basic scanner that only shows the CEL code and delete, that's all.

I tested the downstream O2 sensor and it fluctuates between 0.1v to 0.9v as the manual states for closed operation, so that appears fine.

As for the upstream o2 sensor, I tested it again with the meter and it stays between 0.1v to 0.2v which is open loop and doesn't go to closed loop ever.

I have already changed the upstream sensor once and still open loop.

OK, you shouldnt cut the wires going to an o2, the ecu is calibrated for the car and its set up for the number of connections that car should have, each connection is a slight voltage loss and since you are only dealing with about 1 volt max, it could get it out of whack, The o2 sensor isnt what goes closed loop, the ecu is, and that happens after a number of things happen, like the coolant temp reaches a certain degree, and a timer runs out, and the o2 goes past .5 volt,. but i have seen the ecu get tired of waiting for the o2 and just go closed loop anyways and maybe throw a o2 lean code. Some car makers make a generic program that will work with several motors, you will notice wierd things like no injector pulse width for bank 2, no mass air reading, but the map reading is there, no reading for the b2s1 o2 when its a 4 cyl with 1 bank and 2 sensors, one upstream and 1 downstream, junk like that . You should have a sensor for each head in obd2 and at least 1 downstream, but i have seen exceptions If your upstream never goes past .5 volt even if you floor it, you could have a dead sensor or a heater in the sensor thats not getting voltage You really should find somebody with a snap on or good scanner and knows what their doing to give you a heads up on all the o2 sensors and what they are reading during driving

Hi I just got through changing the o2 sensors in my V6 Lexus ES300. I was having a problem with the codes also. It turns out that there are 3 sensors. The one you havent found is in the exhaust manifold close to the firewall. It is an upstream sensor and probably the same # as the one on top of the manifold right in front. Mine was. If you stand on the drivers side and look down at the manifold you will see it. You need to get underneath to change it. If you have a sensor with a plug that does not fit do not shave it down. It does not fit for a reason. Get the right part. Also, check to see if your car has California emmissions. Mine did.

John
