my camry used to have red coolant but i had it changed, it was time, but when i went to the garage i forgot to specify the guy to replace it with red coolant so now i have green coolant
I just kept the green because that's what the car came with. However, if it came with red, I would stick with red. And like VVT said, don't mix coolants.
If red ever touches green (or vice versa) it will turn into a very hard gel that you can do anything but chip away with a chisle.
They should never be mixed. It can stick anywhere in the system (from obvious nooks and crannies in the waterpump, or radiator) to slick surfaces like ruber hoses <eek>)
It is almost impossible to flush out once formed(like I said, chisel is hard to do), and if enough was mixed, if you were to drain and take your radiator out, it would probably weigh 60lbs instead of 15lbs.
If it did not come with red coolant, it should never see Toyota red coolant. It's the worst stuff ever. Half of Toyota's overheating problems rescently are due to red/green mixing and completely clogging parts of the system. The other half is from mis-marketing Toyota did saying it was "life long" coolant, good for 60,000 miles. Nothing cuold be further from the trueth.
Toyota red will also attack iron parts faster than green because of it's rust/corrosion inhibitor package, very bad for any motor with an iron block!

Holy crap I think that maybe this thread should be in Phi's Ultimate Sticky thread.
Hah, and Ratko tells me I'm useless.
Three more radiators saved!
Eye8Pussies the problem with ferrite metals... Toyota was claiming the fluid would last 6-years / 60,000 odd miles. When it very well might last that long in a very light duty car. The problem happens when that inhibitor package designed to work with aluminum, copper and tin really does last longer than a normal green fluid. It's just that it doesn't last appreciably longer when used with iron based materials. You get nice rust and corrosion and stuff!
Like I said in the other thread, anyone that doesn't believe me when I preach Toyota red is the worst crap on earth, for non OEM-red cars, should spend $5 at the Toyota dealer buying fluid and $1.50 at wallmart to buy yellow/green american (normal) fluid.
Mix the two and come back after 10 min, a half hour, and the next day. Turns to goo, then get's very hard. Clog city!!!

The cynical side of me says that they developed this coolant as a way to milk money out of you. Isn't it called Dexcool? Have you guys seen the cost of it? And by requiring it in the newer vehicles, it's all about $$$
Not wanting to ever start this ancient argument again because there have been many here. There are a million good arguments.
This is however what I found and believe. Toyota coolants (even when they had a green) contained no silicates. They sell their cars with no silicate coolants. Green has silicates. Red uses phosphates. No mixing, period. Always flush to prevent contamination. Use distilled water. Buck a gallon.
No, I do not believe in any extended life fluids so I change my coolant every other year with my other vehicles. I am running T-Red and watching it close. I run Kawasaki Green in my ZX.
