Hood Struts (or lifters, pistons, whatever you call them)

The things that push my hood up in my '94 Camry aren't working. When I go to see if they can be replaced they have rivets on them. How do I remove these rivets and what do I do when I want to install the new ones?

The mounts may be riveted to the hood but the hydraulic hood supports pop off at the ball joint.

Cool

Replacements are on ebay for all gen3/4's for $50-$70 constantly.

Every parts store locally here use to cary generic ones, but stopped due to fitment issues. Now Westwood Auto Parts is the only store that carries them, and they don't stock most. They just warehouse OEM replacements and bring them the next day.

When I had my 92 camry, 2yrs ago they were $80 a piece @ Toyota and $25 in pepboys. I was cheap and cut a piece of wood to my desired length and kept it in my trunk!!

I've got the universal replacements from AutoZone. You'll have to do some drilling of the brackets to get them to fit, but they were $37/each with a lifetime warranty, which is good, cause mine just started to wear out after 2 years....

Cool

^ Just like the OEM struts LoL!
Those things are the crapyest ideas ever. The struts on the hood, hatchbacks ect.

Funny how springs on 30 year old domestics are lifting hoods that weigh 50-100lbs more than import hoods of now, and they still don't have problems 30 years later. Mind you that if you bump one it might fall But same for struts LoL!

gen 3 Camry strut - $31.99
Gen 1 ES 300 strut - $52-$70, depending on the group buy
Both come from the same reputable ebay seller. (Where I just got mine for christmass)

$31.99 for the OEM strut with $7.50 shipping is a good deal.

Hood Strut rivet substitute

I just felt like I would post a picture of what I replaced the rivets with when I replaced my hood struts.

I used a grade 8 bolt, long enough to where it has a flat shaft as well as a threaded end and not just all threaded. I also used a washer, a grade 8 nut, a grade 2 nut, and a thread protector green sleave thing all from ace hardware.

Cool

^ The guy selling them on Ebay includes the mounting hardware.
Just thought I'd follow that up heh.

anuthaCamry as longas it holds the hood up and lifts by itself!
