timing belt procedure - V6

Guys, I'm going to be doing the timing belt on my '96 ES300 with about
215k (the belt was done before around 100k, not sure if the water pump was
done at the same time). Does anyone have a procedure for this ? I want to replace the water pump, tensioners and idler pulleys while I'm in there. What should I be ordering ? So far
I have:

timing belt
pump and thermostat
drive belts
coolant
1 tensioner ?
2 pulleys ?

Any tips appreciated. I read about someone cutting half of the old belt off and sliding on the new one. I don't think I can do it this way if I'm replacing the pump though right ? Is there a
write-up posted somewhere ? Any help appreciated !

Bob

From Toyota repair manual:

From Chiltons manual:

Follow the instructions for a 1MZ-FE.

That'll work for removing the belt, but not installing the new one.

The crank pulley and all the timing belt covers need to be removed to install the belt. Theres no way around it.

Refrain from that. You will have to release the tensioner, as well as have the cylinder(s) in a certain position (i.e. BTDC at cylinder one) as per the FSM or a repair manual. Good luck.

thanks for the follow up guys.. one more ?

Do I need to pick a set of "spanner wrenches" ? I've seen that referenced a few times. If so,
what size(s) should I get ?

^ Not sure what you mean by spanner wrench.

If your talking about closed end/open end wrenches, you need 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, 17 mm, and 19 mm.

spanner wrench

Here's what it says in the directions:

"Using a spanner wrench, remove the right side camshaft timing pulley. Do the same for the left side"

Is this just a standard wrench ? I have seen two types spanner wrenches before, one being a
regular open end wrench but really thin used for tight spots and the kind with pins in the end used for locking things in place. I assume I just need regular open end wrenches to do this ?

thanks,
Bob

You don't need to remove the camshaft pulleys/camgears to change the timing belt. The only time you need to remove them is when your removing the heads or camshafts.

Edit:I forgot that you were also going to replace the water pump. In which case you do need to remove the camshaft pulleys according to the instructions.

So you need a spanner wrench (Toyota calls it a SST (special service tool)). It looks like a weird shaped wrench with 2 pins on it. The pins fit into holes in the camshaft pulley and allow you to hold it still, while breaking the bolt lose.

Instead of using a spanner wrench or SST, you can remove the valve covers (good luck getting to the rear one though) and use a big adjustable wrench. Theres a flat spot on the camshaft that you can put the wrench around to hold it still.

By the way cross posting is a

This is the thread I'm refering to:
