Rear Brake Drums

I have a 98 Camry LE I4 with 100,000k. The shop is telling me that my rear brake drums are not thick enough to turn and I need new ones. Is this common for the rear drums? I know that the front rotors go fast, but I thought the rear drums would last longer.

The drums on my 00 Corolla give a lot of vibration if I pull up on the parking brake at higher speeds, They are at 100K miles. I have thought about getting new ones. I dont care much to get rotors turned I just replace them.

I had troubles with the drums on my 91 Prizm as well. I was thinking it could be a common Toyota problem.

Might as well get new drums, I'd make sure your shoes are in good shape while it's all apart... Also make sure your wheel cylinders are good, they leaked on my '87 when I had it so brake fluid got on the shoes and in the dead of winter the shoes, b/c of the fluid, literally froze onto the drums!!!

[B]Anyone with vibration under braking, near 100k miles or less

I replaced the drums on my 00 Corolla and the problem was solved, It was most noticeable when pulling up on the parking brake. But I could also feel it under normal braking somewhat. ( I have new front rotors )

I was happy that the drums just pulled right off, cleaned with brake cleaner and new ones right back in place. The parking brake was a little iffy at first but later after driving a while, and pulling the brake to the limit a few times it is working great.

Easy fix, just got the cheap drums with 2 year warr $25 each

crah,

Have the drums ever been cut before? I would be surprised if they haven't been cut before and there isn't enough meat left to cut them at least one time. Some places just want to make it easier on themselves by not having to cut the drums (it takes a bit of time to convert a brake lathe from cutting rotors and switch to drums and then back again for the next rotors) and make a bit more money by selling you new drums.

CraigW,

Where did you get drums for that price?

Mike

Quite sure the drums un-touched, I have owned since 25K I had the exact same thing with 91 Prizm. Someone mentioned the parking brake shudder, so I thought I would take the gamble. They could possibly be turned, but I don't even turn rotors anymore just run until they warp.

The rotors and drums are from Auto-Zone with a 2 year warranty.

any time you need new pads or shoes its usally easier to just replace the rotor or drum. drums that have a 100k on them really should be replaced thats not bad at all. that is the normal wear out time frame.

Running OEM pads first set 50k second set 98K with new rotors (could not stand the rotors they had to go still had some pad left) Also needed disc brake quiet application to second set, drove me crazy for nearly 50k.

Drums have been bad for a while, I should have remembered from the 91 I had. After I put on the rotors I still had some shake on braking, so the drums became next on the list.

Wow, getting 100K out of rear brakes is pretty good! But with that being said, I got 90K out of the front brake pads! The rear brakes were actually changed before the front brakes. I'm pretty easy on brakes.

I've never worked on drums and didn't think they put drums on cars anymore. Are drums hard to work on?

I paid $24 for each front disc a couple years ago. Was that pretty cheap? Not trying to hijack the thread but since we're talking about prices...

I think that is pretty cheap. I paid $30 each for brembo blanks. For drums, I bought them from a groupbuy by importrp and I think they were a little under $30 each. I still haven't gotten around to installing them because I'm not sure how to replace brake shoes and don't have proper tools to do so.
