timing belt follow up question...

A couple of you responded to my question about the need for a "spanner wrench" the other
day when doing the TB service on a V6. Just had a thought though... if I'm not replacing the
cam or crank seals do I need to take off the cam and crank pulleys at all ? Maybe I'm making
more out of this than I need to. I'm planning on doing the Timing belt, Water pump, 2 idler pulleys and tensioner. Can't I just leave the pulleys on to do this ?

thanks,
Bob

The crank pulley needs to be removed to get to the timing belt.

And the 2 camgears/pulleys need to be removed to replace the water pump.

ok, thanks. One last question...

I don't have the SST (spanner wrench) on hand, can I loosen the cam bolts while the belt is
still on ? In other words, have the belt act as the spanner wrench by holding the cam pulleys
in place. I'm trying to avoid taking the cam covers off since the back one is such a bitch. Any other way to lock the cam pulley ? Screwdriver locked into something ? thanks for the help..

Bob

a large channel lock works well, i have been guilty of using an oil filter wrench at times, but usually the t belt will hold them just fine

excellent...would the same be true for the crank bolt ?

If I have one of the cams locked with channel locks or something else, will the Timing belt lock the crank pulley enough that I can loosen the crank bolt without having to lock the flywheel
or use the "starter" method ?

forgot that part.. I do have an impact, the heavy duty Ingersall Rand.

Do you think I'll be able to zip it off with just the belt keeping everything else locked then ?
thanks for your help so far...
