Changing brake lights

I feel quite stupid at having to ask this question but after trying for quite a while, might as well. My car is a 98 camry and my rear left brake light died. I went to the store and bought a replacement bulb. Now my problem is that I can't seem to get the old bulb out of the socket. From looking at the replacement bulb, it seems like there are grooves along the base of bulb which I guess is why it's not coming out. Is there some... release button that I'm completely overlooking or am I just not pulling hard enough on the bulb. I don't think changing a broken bulb is too hard of a task so I think I'm just missing something...

If # 1157 push down on bulb (or base if that is all that is left) turn to left and it should pull straight out of socket.
