250hp or so on boost before you have to do a build. But if your building the engine with forged parts, I'm sure it could push 400+ easy. That is, if your doing a full build (cams, forged crank/pistons/rods, porting, etc)

Cool

The cranks on a 3vz should take 400-450lb-ft

The problem with the pistons and rods are the pistons. If you lean them out too much you'll burn a hole through them.

There shouldn't be any reason why you can't get 325-375hp, with the associated amounts of torque, on the stock motor with very careful tuning.

325-375 crank horsepower mind you of course you are manual so it will be easier, just remember to tune it and that thing should run fine with that kind of power

Cool

I'm not going to say that's impossible, because there are two turbo, stock motor 5vz-fe 4runners pushing 360rwhp.

But good luck reaching that goal.

^^ Where did you hear that? I can lean out the engine as much as I want minding you that the ignition timing is retarded enough.

And technically speaking, if you lean out the engine to the point of detonation or preignition, it will blow up regardless or being forged or not

Cool

Exactly right Tony.
I just happen to believe our totally iron (no coating) pistons will melt under a lean condition and poor tuning because of in-experianced tuners, rather than be detonated to pieces from poor ignition timing/pre-ignition problems.

Remember you atleast get the benifit of whatever type of coating is on the face of yours. When I knocked the built up carbon off my 3vz-fe pistons, they was no helpful ceramic coating. I've never seen OEM 3vz-fe pistons out of the engine, but I have seen both OEM and aftermarket 3vz-e pistons. 100% cast iron with no coatings what so ever.
I'll be the first to argue with good tuning a 3vz-fe can match your original turbo upgrade of 375 crank horsepower, I just happen to think you had a lot of little help on the piston side!

Judging by the same-technology dead 5vz-fe's, and 5s-fe's It seems to me the #1 cause of engine failure is a poor A/F mixture (or unknown failure causing an incorrect mixture) in a piston, blowing a hole in it.
That's just my opinion from watching a bunch of other projects, but hey! I'm probably wrong if you say the rods/pins will bust first from too much power, or detonation problems!

Remember you also have one thing noone else (but probably McElligott) has... Neither of you are newbies to higher horsepower, or boosted engines. There is no substitute for experiance. You're both living proof of it.

Tell ya what, if no real-life issues come up, Sean McElligott oughta be done with his 3vz-fe Turbo kit sometime in the comming week. (Monday at the soonest) Wanna put some pride on the line to bet what, if anything, let's go before he declairs the kit to have "enough power" and "safe to sell"???
