help removing tree sap

So yeah my camry was left in south georgia for the summer and my dad left it outside and it now has some tree sap on the hood and a nice drip on the front windshield. Is there anything I can buy at the local auto store to safely remove it w/o damaging the paint? Thanks.

Cool

Most actual tree-sap/tar removers use to be based on turpentine.

I bought a house with a car port, I feel your pain though. I hate that crap
I normally let it harder and chip at it with my fingernail or plastic scraper being super carfull with the paint

Meguiar's Deep Crystal paint cleaner. $5 at any auto parts store.

Wipe that off as soon as possible--they can eat the paint away if you let it dry up.

Btw, do NOT use Simple Green!! It's not recommended to be sprayed on the paint.

EDIT: Once you wipe that off with the paint cleaner, you will want to clean the rest of the car with it. Removes oxidations as well as some white spots--don't know how you call them, could be peeling clear coat. Did that to my neighbor's at his request and did wonders. Brought back the shine and the color!

Cleaner wax is good also, but will give you a damn hard time taking it off unless it's already been washed off initially (with no luck). Use this when you've wiped off the main "splot" part.

Wonder if you could use ice or cold spray to make it brittle, so it would chip off?

The best thing I have seen to remove tree sap was wood alcohol (methyl alcohol). We tried a variety of chemicals on a '96 Mustang Cobra when I worked at a Ford dealership and none of them touched the sap but the alcohol took one wipe and it was gone. Just don't confuse it with rubbing alcohol - that didn't work.

Good luck.

Okay maybe I didn't clarify. I dab a bit on a paper towel and wipe over the spot and then immediately wash off. Sorry to be so brief. Like Cam2xrunner said, Claybar works wonders. Sometimes if it's real bad and has etched into the first layer of clearcoat, a good compounding with lots of water will work.

I still won't put Simple Green on my paint, even for a dab. That's what Meguiar's is for.

But Lauren you're right to wash it off immediately.
