Which is better for fuel consumption?

I've been trying to nut this out for a while now. Can't seem to figure out which is better.

Which will give you better fuel consumption while driving?

1- Car in higher gear (3rd or OD (or 5th for manual)) and foot down on accelerrator more to get the same acceleration.

2- Car in lower gear (1st or 2nd etc), reving higher..but accelerator not as far down to achieve same acceleration because of the rev range.

Both cases seem to get the same thing.
If you accelerate more, more fuel is dumped in.
If the engine revs more..it uses more fuel.

So which is better?

Compair the rpm & injector duty cycle for both.
One might instantly assume accelerating from a lower RPM, but there is a large differance in fuel injected between a load being on the engine, and no load.

There is a balance somewhere between the two, but IDK how you could find it out easily.

Car in lower gear. You're not stepping on the gas and it wouldn't use up as much as when you'd floor it. When you floor it at 4th or 5th gear the engine will have a hard time given that both conditions have the same speed. But like Toysrme said there is a balance between the two. But to play safe, highest gear possible while maintaining speed. Check your tire pressures. No extra weight necessary, etc...
