Looks like you have gold plating on your emblems. I suspect this plating has worn off over the years and needs to be replated. This has occured eventually on all vehicles I have owned/seen with gold pating. You could probably purchase your own kit on ebay or take it to a shop and have them go over it again.
Get some metal polish if that works. Use a toothbrush for angles in the lettering like the "XLE". When you're done coat with wax then clean the residue again. Hope that helps
i have gold emblems on my '95 and have had good experience with oxy-clean like xpeed already mentioned. it available at walmart pretty cheap. very good results and not too harsh or abrasive.
The gold plating on your emblems has simply warn off. Gold is very soft and wears off easily. You will need to get a new set or have them replated. I was told by a body shop that I trust, that the process of replating these on the car doesn't hold up very long so your best bet is to get a new set. As someone has suggested, I would look on e-bay as the ones from the dealer are very expensive. If you do get a new set, keep all waxes away from them.
