bad fitment on intake cause engine probs?

On last friday night i was checkin up on my car like fluid levels and other things to keep the car runnin and the car was runnin perfectly. i noe i had a small gap between the intake and the throttle body but it didnt effect the car. well when i got up the next day i tried to turn on my car but it wouldnt start up but after several heart pounding minz it finally started but badly. when i took it on the road it would jerk hard into gears especially 1st nd 2nd and when u let go of the peddle the car would jerk hard too. i took it to mechanics nd 1st guy said possibly tranny is messed up. so i decided to ge a 2nd opinion and me nd my dad took it to a mechanic he knows that knows alot more than the 1st mech. after i popped the hood he pointed out that i need to replace intake hose.

now my question is would a little gap cause this big problem such as loosin this amount of power and causeing the car jerk here and there? my friend told me to do a basic-major tuneup but mech just told me to do intake so i will. give me some suggestions and if that could really cause all this.

Two of my freinds have somehwta of a similar problem. On one of freinds protege he car was in a crash and his intake set up got cracked in numerous places and this causes his car to jerk and stutter in those two gears. Then my other freind's eclipse has a crack in his intake and it does the same thing.

Cool

Make sure you don't have anymore vacuum leaks first.

well those little tubes that comes off the intake hose has little cracks at the ends. would that affect it too not sure if it has gaps or anything. ill take pics to show exactly

also before any of this happened it used to idle exactly around the 2nd notch or the 500 rpm mark after the car is warm. now it idles in betwen the 2nd nd 3rd notch.

I second (or 3rd) the vacuum leak theory. Actually, the big intake hose you replaced was causing a major vacuum leak. All air going in to the engine through the throttle body in a multiport fuel injection system must be metered for both volume of air and temperature. The computer, getting readings from the various sensors, then adjusts the fuel mixture accordingly. If you have any vacuum leaks, this allows unmetered air in to the system. You stated the tubes have little cracks in them. This probably means they are also sucking in air. This is cheap and easy to fix. If both tubes (vacuum tubing) are the same size, take one off and go to any auto parts store and match it up and buy some vacuum tubing. It's usually sold by the foot and is pretty cheap. Maybe something like 59 cents a foot. While you are at it, check for other vacuum hoses that are cracked too and replace those.

also when at low gear i feather the throttle nd it revvs up from 1000rpm from coasting to about 3000rpms but car doesnt move. my friend says to get a tuneup:plugs, wires, rotors, etc. should i do it?

How long have you been running that aftermarket air filter setup? Did the problem occur right after you put that on? Check the clamps for tightness on that air filter. Some of the OEM setups have a temperature sensor that goes in the original air filter box. Bypassing that sensor could cause problems like you are experiencing. Just another thing to check form what I see in your pictures.

The RPM jumping up like you say makes me think you still have a major vacuum leak somewhere. Check the large vacuum line that feeds the brake booster. I had an animal eat through that on one of my cars and the RPM's jumped way up like you describe.

naw i had that filter on there for a while nd it didnt cause any probs wat so ever. now when u talk about the brake booster where can i find that? need to find out wat exactly is causing me the prob and not spending 280 bucks just for a major tuneup and find out its not the prob just some simple vacuum hose. i did replace everything that i can see especially the ones in the pics and the intake hose. besides that u have to direct me to where exactly the hoses are nd ill see.

The brake booster will be attached to the firewall near the top. It should have about a 1/2 diameter vacuum line attached to it.

As far as the tune up, it really depends on how many miles these tune up items have on them, but I don't think they would cause the RPM's to raise up that high as you stated. They would usually cause a misfire under load (on excelleration). If the coil inside the distributor were going bad due to a crack, which is common on your generation Camry, it would be noticably worse in wet/damp weather.

I'm still leaning toward a vacuum leak somewhere.

As to the question about the crack in the item in that picture, sorry, it's not clear enough for me to see anything there.
