CD Changer question

I just got a 1997 Camry assuming that it had a CD changer, as it has the head unit to control one. However, I open up the trunk, and there's nothing there. I figure that it was removed somewhere along the line, as I can't think of anywhere else the changer would be. I was wondering, if the head unit is there, is the car wired for a changer? Could I just pick up another changer and plug it in, and that would work? If so, how much would it cost and could I easily do it myself? If anyone can help me out with this, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

The head unit has the ability to control a changer but it was an option. I also don't think the wiring is there. I had an aftermarket changer (Panasonic) added to my wife's 98 XLE that came with the 3-in-1 radio and had to use the aftermarket unit's wiring and an adapter cord to make it work with the factory sound system. It works great and is an 8 disc changer as compared to the 6 disc one offered by Toyota. The OEM one from Toyota was also much more expensive. All that being said, I think the 97's used the same sound systems as the generation 3's (92-96) and Toyota converted the generation 4's to a new sound system starting with model year 98. I never did understand why they did that. What I recommend you do is call Crutchfield (or go to their website) and ask them if there is an add-on unit available for your car and what is involved in installing it. If there is, shop around for a better price. You can easily beat Crutchfield's pricing.

Yeah, I did something similar in my old 1991 Acura Legend. All Legends came prewired for the changer, so I hunted around on eBay and found a cheap one. I was hoping I could do the same for this car, but it looks like it might be a little bit more work. Thanks a lot of your help, Mike. I'll give Crutchfield a call.
