Question Antenna help.

Not sure if this question belongs in this forum, but if it doesn't, would the moderators kindly remove it? Thanks.

First off, I drive a 1992 Camry LE V6. My antenna problem all started when everytime it extended all the way, there would be a loud grinding noise. So I thought the teeth on the cable were worn out, so I ordered another one form eBay. I install yesterday, and everything is fine until this afternoon when the grinding noise (this time it's shorter than the original grinding noise), comes back again. So I take out the antennna and I compare it to the old one, and I notice that the the cable on the old one is shorter, and it looks like a piece snapped off or something. Is it possible that a chunk of the old cable is still stuck in the spool of the antenna motor assembly? Any advice would be great, thanks.

That can be very possible, it is a somewhat common problem. Or else the gear that makes it go up and down is stripped.

The assembly looks like this:

I'm kind of afraid to remove it from my camry and to open up the spool. Would you guys do it if you were in my position?
