why so cold?

after waiting about 10-15 mins. for my car to warm up i get in and its about the same temperature as when i first got in to start it. I am just wondering what i can do to help it to warm up a little quicker, the engine is warm but the car is not...

:: i heard that cardboard can be placed over the radiator to make it warm up faster.. I tryed it with my shelby dodge shadow and it worked, but the radiator fluid is nothing more than water... will this be safe for my camry??? thanks in advace guys.

covering your radiator with cardboard will prolly do more damage....u are blocking its cooling abilities....and also creating a fire hazard within your engine compartment....best way to let the car heat up is to just wait....

That, and you'd be putting a lot of strain on the electric fans on the back.

rev the engine. Even if you idle or remote start your car and leave it for 15 minutes, it won't be as warm as if you were driving the car for 15 minutes.

dont leave the fan and heater on full blast either, cause then it will take longer to get hot air than if you keep the fan off till your engine is warm

Cool

Cars are meant to be driven, not sit idling away with nothing up to tempature.

Crank it, and drive it at a normal pace. Whenever the coolant needle hits the first zone, you're at operational perameters, drive it harder (if you do drive hard).

I thought the goal was to warm up the car faster? The heater is another radiator for the car; it cools down the engine. (Where do you think the heat comes from?) That's why if you're driving in the Sahara in 120 degree weather in an old, overheating VW, you turn on the heater to cool the engine. (true story)

If you want the car to heat up faster, turn OFF the heater. Turning ON the AC might warm it up even faster (I would not recommend this for everyday use in the winter.) The fastest way, however, is to drive the damn thing. 1 minute and it's warm.

Very true, same applies to driving in 4WDL on the beaches of NC, 3 hours straight at 25 MPH, heater cools engine down. Also a true story.

Best advice is to drive normal, higher rpms will increase engine temps faster.

turning on the ac will not warm up the car faster because it also activates the cooling fan. turning on the heater will hopefully warm up the car, but to add more load you can turn on the high beams. It doesn't freeze over here, but if it did maybe I would cover part of the radiator like you see those yukon truckers do on tv.

our 95 is like that. i noticed if you have it on defrost you get very little heat. change it to the vent and floor and it will cook you out.

I forgot about the AC turning on the cooling fan. BUT: Does the radiator coolant flow when the engine is cold? If not, the cooling fan shouldn't matter much.

In the north we use cardboard all the time. Does not do much for warm up time but keeps coolant warm for longer after shutdown. Check to be sure that no warm hose to the rad can be felt until gauge gets moving up . If it warms right away (1 minute or so) you have a bad thermostat. You could also fit a block heater (110 volt plug in) . we use these for a couple of hours on a timer before driving

PS I left cardboard covering 1/2 thre rad all last summer (mistake) . It still did not overheat or otherwise screw up. It might have cost me some A/C performance
