Question Can't shift from Park (automatic)!!!!

ok so the other day i started my car like normal and tried to take it out of park and the shift button was locked. so i overrode the shifter with that "shift override" and created a way so that the button is always overrode b/c it still won't shift from P. it shifts from every other gear except FROM park...driving it shifts perfectly.
any ideas, suggestions, etc???
thanks you guys for always help....

the sensor or switch at the brake petal might be stuck or broke... check the carpet around the switch, I had the same problem in my wife's car with the carpet around the brake light switch.

I have the ultimate solution to this problem.

At some point your car, like mine, had liquid spilt into the shifter. When this liquid got cold after a good nights rest for your car, and you - it became sticky and viscous preventing the actuating electromagnet from working right.

This requires removing shifter cover, the center console (armrest), and the console body around the shifter. I'm not sure of whether or not the shifter needs to be removed to get to that part, but simply cleaning the sticky stuff should suffice.

BUT SIMPLY REPAIRING IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME

I don't want to be stuck in park while freddy kruger moseys on up to my window, I wanna be able to shift when I want to. So here's what I did:

After I got everything cleaned up and to full stock working condition, I wrapped several large cable ties around the overide - secondary lever. Now it operates as if the override button were always pressed in.

It funtions exactly the same way cars in the 80s worked before someone invented the brake pedal & shift out of park interlock. (damn those audi 5000s!!!)

I have a manual shift knob on mine holding down the rod. I made a shift boot for it and a lexan trim piece. No more brake override or anything. The car goes into any gear you want any time so be careful. It is an interesting mod cause everyone assumes its a manual at first and then you tell them its not and they are like wow......wait how does that work?

you still have to push in on the shift button on my mod, it's behaves like any stock car made until 1991 or so when the interlock was mandated. you still need to have the tran in P to remove the key. It is my opinion that the brake-shift out of park interlock is a detriment and an annoyance of no value. It was probably due to an alleged fault of the audi 4000s that prompted such a device.

If the brake pedal switch is not working, you may find that your brake lights don't work either. Please check that also.

Do you have an aftermarket shift knob? If you do, take it off and it will shift out of park again.

get into your 1992 or newer, unaltered, US market, automatic transmission passenger car.

push in on the shift button and shift from P into any gear.

did you have your foot on the brake?

try that again without touching the brake pedal, did it shift? or was is stuck?
the brake pedal-shift out of park interlock is that 'glue'

(now try taking the key out the ignition with the car in drive...)
