Overdrive effecting higher gears?

Just wondering, if overdrive isnt enabling would it not allow the engine to shift into higher gears because my car seems like it only would go up to like 3rd gear mayb 4th but i doubt it. my engine is 2vz-fe v6 has 143,000k miles. any suggestion on how to fix it or what other probs might b affecting it.

if o/d is off it won't go into 4th gear. how do you know it doesn't go into 4th.. usually the shift from 3 to 4 is very smooth..i can tell when i look at the tach say i'm at like 2500rpm in 3rd gear and once i hit like 35-40 the tach till drop to 2000rpm and it's in 4th gear and i don't even feel a thing

my 4th gear doesnt kick in till like 45-55 or somewhere not close to yours. it may shift into 4th cause i hear it somewhat. it just seems like it stays in 3rd way too long than needed and sounds like the engine is roaring too high like you top'd out on the gear. thats y im saying O/D isnt working or something. + when i take off O/D it doesnt feel like it gets out of it or gets bak in it. before my engine started acting up i would disable O/D and could feel the car enable or disable it by somewhat a jerk or something it lets me noe. it doesnt do it anymore it just doesnt make any sort of thing that lets me know its on or off.

Cool

Ooo Ooo I've fixed this on two different a540/2vz-fe combo's in the last 3 days! Hahahahaha

Go put your transmissions kick-down cable back into the middle of the adjustment range. It's more than likely loosened itself all the way to the stop.
Here
(Or pull it all the way tight if you want it to downshift earlier and shift a little quicker)

Cool

If you go one direction it will resist downshifting and clunk into gear.
If you go the other it will downshift early, and do it quickly.

edit:right now i dont noe what the position it is right now. ill check tommorrow

Smile 92 camry

hello,
my 92 camry with auto tranny has the similar problem not with the o/d gear but the power push button next to the gear handle.

when I push the power button down , power light comes on but don't feel any change in the power and when I push it again, power light goes off and no difference in power - it seems like power button does not do anything.

what can be wrong?
please help.
ashok

The power button is suppose to hold the gear longer before it shifts.

However if you drive normally you won't notice any difference.

Mash the pedal with the power button on and you'll see.

you dont gain any power.. it just tells the auto box to be more aggressive...itl hold gears longer, and shift down faster wen you stomp on it.

all im trying to point out is that 1)it stays in 3rd gear a little too long 2) 4th gear doesnt enable fast enough 3)jerking of car when letting go of gas peddle over 50mph(sort of not related) 4) i have felt a diff when driving normally when pushing the O/D button on and off but not doin that anymore
