How to paint interior parts?

I need help painting my interior parts. I've tried twice and both was unsucessful. First trial was on the ashtray front, with Duplicolor high temperature paint. The front was just washed with soap. The paint actually dried up pretty nicely and hard, but there were spots where paint isnt absorbed as much....maybe due to the oil/wax on the ashtrays front? Anyways does anyone know what I should use to clean the interior pieces or what type of prep precedure is best before painting them? or have any suggestions on what type of paint to use?.. so far i've used duplicolor high temperature(silver), and rusto something paint (white)

Not intended as a post jack, but who here knows of a good fabric dye? I am have been looking and now I should be looking for acid dyes but some pointers would help.

use vinyl/carpet spray paint to do your interior. itll take quite a bit to dry, but its a permanent dye into the plastic itself not just a coating of color.
