I'm looking to hardwire a escort 7500/8500 and placing it right over my rear view mirror to the left. Hopefully i can run it to the ceiling and find a wire to splice into. What are my best chances of splicing a wire in a gen 3.5
Do i need a constant 12v? I assume the higher i put it up the more senstive it gets and plus if its high up there the chances of a cop seeing from his level is less likely where as if i had it on my dash since he will be standing up.
It is really easy to hardwire a radar detector. I did it just last month with my 98 camry and Valentine One. I hardwired a autodimming mirror a year or so ago, which tapped into the ignition wire...so I just tapped into the same wire under the dash- that way it turns on when the car is on. I ran the wire up the driver's side A pillar, and across the headliner, and the wire comes out where under the headliner a little to the right of the rearview mirror. Just remember to leave enough slack so that you can move it a bit. (I put mine to the right of the mirror during the day, and to the left of the mirror at night (when the sunvisor isn't used).
Just remember to make sure that the detector is high enough to be out of your line of vision, but not high enough to be in the tinted band that is at the top of the windshield- that can lower its range.
And when the car is parked, the wire goes right back up into the headliner, and the detector goes in the center console. That way it doesn't attract any prying eyes.
No, I don't have a scanner- but what exactly do you want to know? It looks pretty stock now. There are no wires showing or anything like that. There is nothing I hate more than wires or anything that doesn't belong naturally, so I made sure that all the wires were concealed, and even when the detector isn't mounted, the wire neatly hides back in the headliner- with only the very end of the wire showing.
I have my Sensoro Silver Bullet wired to the fuse box with the wire running up the A pillar. I just unscrewed a couple of screws that are in the door jamb holding down the plastic cover to get the wire under it. Once the wire is at the top where it meets the headliner, I just used a flat head screwdriver to carefully push the wire under where the headliner meets the windshield. I went all the way to the rearview mirror and electrical taped the wire to the mirror stem. The wire drops down a little past the bottom of the mirror to where I have the bracket suction cupped to the windshield. I had to go this low b/c I have a window tint strip that ends right about there. It is not that noticeable from outside from the front b/c it looks almost like it's part of the rearview mirror and it is at eye level from the inside. Make sure to leave a little slack like 98CamryLE said so that you can adjust it. I left about 2' extra tucked in the top of the A pillar just in case.
this is for RSX but it should give you an idea on how to hard wire the EScort.

If you can't or don't want to do it yourself, you could always go to Circuit City or Best Buy and see if they'd do it for you. When I worked at Best Buy we charged $15/labor and $3 parts (ripoff on the parts but eh...) for it... plus you had a lifetime guarantee on the labor.
Hey those of you who are interested in one of those auto dimming mirrors: There is a Genuine Toyota one listed on ebay right now, currently at $129 (149 buy it now). It is from the same seller that I bought mine from.
By the way- this is not meant to be spam or anything like that. I am not the seller, but I can tell you that I bought one from him/her like 1 1/2 years ago, and I love it.
