hello new to the site and its great alot of useful information here. Well to the problem my girl has a 1993 4 cylinder camry, we were on the hiway out of town and it just dies on me going 65 on the highway. The motor cut off i coasted to a stop and tried to do some repairs on the side of the hyway but couldnt fix it. The motor turns over but wont start for nothing, I thought it might be the fuel injectors but my dad is hell bent on the timing belt so were are in the process of changing it and haveing a hell of a time with that crank pulley bolt. i have checked every thing fro the battery to the coil to the fuel filter fuel pump and the dist . The only problem was one of the spark plugs wasnt firing but i replaced it with new ones and they spark but still the car wont start. Id like to get ur opinions on what it might be, i have good mechanical skills and can fix anything on my truck but its so much easier on a 94 gmc than a 93 camry especially with everything crammed in there. Hopefully you guys can help me out maybe one of yall have experienced this before. thanks in advance for any help i really appreciate it.
Have you checked the EFI fuse/relay yet? It should be under the hood on top of the left fender. Pull it out and switch it with the one for the A/C. See if that works.
Did you check to see if the timing belt was broke by removing the plastic cover?
there is a rudimentary way of checking for a broken timing belt/chain research this elsewhere 'cause I'm not an expert but from my experiences trying to start one with a broken belt the starting proceedure makes a vacuum cleaner noise from the motor versus the typical "choo-choo-choo-choo" sound of a motor actually pumping air.
check the 7.5amp fuses behind the driver left knee panel, also check the fuses in the two boxes around the battery. having a plug not spark could mean a weak ign. system which could mean a bad ignitor or coil.
also, did you use 'fuel injection cleaner' recently? I blew a high pressure fuel pump with some of that crap, at precisely the same time a camshaft 'escaped' the cylinder head of another car I used to have, and that was a difficult time to track down.
search this site for information pertaining to a repair manual, that should get you started. specifically there is a checklist that you can go down systematically and rule out/narrow down possible causes.
Spark means the timing belt is turning.., simple. Still, it could have skipped a tooth but still it will run if that happens, and thats rare to. You could have lost a fuel pump. Its hard to tell the tell-tale noise the pump makes, kind of a whining noise when its working, with ignition on the pump should be on I think? Ignition CAN die, but thats rare going down the highway, distributors rarely fall apart, but they can crack, just check it and your good. Did it feel like the gas ran out?, sounds like what you said.., just trying to be observant.., maybe check fuel.., not my specialty, sorry.
Spark means the timing belt is turning, it DOES NOT indicate it's turning AT THE RIGHT TIME.
Fuel, spark and compression - all at the right time. you obviously have fuel and spark... The ECU is required to be functioning for spark signals to be sent, so forget the entire electrical system.
Continue changing the timing belt...
The easyest way to get the pully bolt off is to take a large (1/2") wratchet and wedge it on the ground. (make sure the ignition wire is off so you don't fire) Hit the starter and it will torque the bolt loose. Take it off by hand.
Put cylinder 1 and top dead center, and spin the cams until they are at the designated top dead center position for cylinder #1.
Problem solved. ^ you might as well replace the other belts, they cost $20.
You might want to get a timing light and check the timing once that's been done.

Alright guys im done for the day working on the car. I changed the timing belt the old one was pretty worn out, put everything back together and of course it still didnt start. I checked the plugs they are getting fire, one wasnt when i first started working on it but i changed it out with new wires and they all get spark now. I checked the fuel pump its making a clicking noise and its pumping fuel through the fuel filter so that is fine. i checked the efi and it working fine, now im just lost i stuck a hankercheif down in to the spark plug holes and it smelled like gas it didnt have any on it but it stunk pretty good. I know it has gas when we took it out i put in a full tank. i checked all the fuses outside but i havent gotten to the ones on the inside yet. Tommorow i will check the dist and coil to make sure everything is ok again. Im still lost in what it could be but thanks guys for all your advise as soon as i read them i went out and tried it. OH also i have to manual i must have read the whole thing like 3 times but im still missing something. Well thanks again guys tommorow i will be out ther again in the crappy weather working on it.
i know this may sound obvious but have you tried doing a basic tune up. once or twice my old toyotas just died. no start or anything. after replacing the plugs, cap, and rotor the car started right up. if u are getting fuel and spark then and you have tried everything else, why not spend $20-30 on a plugs and stuff. i know it sounds simple but give it a try. sometimes a crack in the cap lets moisture in and the car hates that shit.
hm, sounds like you've covered just about everything.
Ok, lets assume the old timing belt jumped. If you have an interference engine, the valves could've hit the pistons. A bent valve might not allow proper compression. I.E. no firing. Just a thought.
I had a similar problem and went nuts replacing just about everything before I figured it out.
I have a question....did you try squirting some starting fluid into it when trying to start? My car would start for a second, when doing this so I knew the spark and timing were okay.
The problem? I had a couple clogged fuel injectors! Now, I dump a can of injector cleaners into all my cars about once every 6 months and haven't had a problem with injectors.
