Cool

Bobistheoilguy.com

Ask there. Not knocking anyone on Toyota nation about lubricant knowledge, but you'll probably find an audiance with first hand knowledge/testing experiance.

I don't have a manual shift Camry but I use synthetic gear oil for my Miata.

You should use the correct type (GL4, GL5 or either) and viscosity oil. Check in the owner's manual for the appropriate oil to use.

I use Royal Purple (75W90 for California) in both the tranny and the diff. The shift is fantastically smooth. In the California "cold" just a first couple of shifts that is a little sticky and then it is ready to go.

You should be able to find Royal Purple in racing shops. Many Miata owners use Mobil 1 syn. gear oil or Redline MT90 or Redline MTL. Mobil 1 oil can be found in major auto parts store. Redline is tricky to find. You may have to shop online.

At the least check out the web site of these lubricants manufacturers.

I just checked my Miata's manual for the recommended viscosity and it appears 75W90 is it for temp. below 50 degree F. 80W90 can be used if it is above that.

At -35 (I suppose you are talking about Fahrenheit) it is a rather extreme condition you are in. And 75W90 may still be too thick. You may want to write and ask the oil manufacturers and Toyota and see what they recommend.

I would worry about using ATF where gear oil is recommended.

There are some good people on that site for sure. I see no reason to go synthetic in engine except cold starting/initial wear . I had the manual transmission changed to Castrol Syn Gear oil & will report on cold weather effects later . So far only -5 this winter.

I use good quality ATF oil in my manual trans, it get ass freezing cold here too.
Have used ATF oil in my manual trans for years and can recomend it. Using fully synthetic
engine oil is just nonsense, i use 10W40 semi synthetic oil in my engine, and if you havent been using fully synthetic oil since day one, then its no use starting now as you would
only get increased oil consumtion by doing so. Its better with a good quality semi/half
synthetic oil with the rigth wiscosity instead of buying that expensive fully synthetic
oil.
