You can't hammer it off like that. You need a forked wedge to hammer into the joint to pop it. Loosen the castlenut, but leave it on some of the threads so that when it pops it'll stop. The forked wedge is about $25 CDN at an auto place.
There are two types of common forked wedges, one for ball joints and one for the steering nuckle, the latter is smaller, the fork is narrower.
