Anybody know of any cheap ways to get extra power out of the '94 1MZFE engine? I ran a 17.1 at the drag strip last week and I know I should be faster than that. I'm taking some weight out of the car (removing spare tire and bringing less junk) and I'm putting premium in the gas tank. I think I'm gonna go for a K&N or TRD air filter. Any opinions on those filters? Thanks.

I have heard many people say here on TN that using higher then the recomended octane (87 for our cars), does not yield any beifit. It may actally make it worse.

^^^^ True, but if you are running a strip at WOT, you might want to up your octane a little. Not premium, don't go over 91. 89 should work nicely. You might also want to consider getting some better mods than filters if you wanna run at the strip, like exhaust, headwork, SAFC, ect. Some good tires or drag radials might help also.

thats correct-the higher octane is to detour detonation in high compression engines. It's best to use the recommended octane. I prefer the cone type K&N filter. it flows alot better and will yield a better throttle response.maybe advance your timing alittle. other than that I don't know alot of cheap ways to get more HP from a stock engine
I didn't think there would be many cheap things I could do. I'll have to save up some money to buy some fun toys for it. As far as the octane, my car actually does perform better on premium than on regular. The lexus es uses the exact same motor and they recommend premium in their owner's manual.

also toyota dose recomend the use of 91 octaine with a compresion ratio of 10.5 i def say keep higher than 87 ... actualy my cam is bitch if i use anything lower than 89 .....
if you havent try tuning up your engine which includes that little bottle of injector cleaner and a whole top end cleaning too.

You will make more power with the lowest octane gas. As stated earlier, higher octane gas resists detonation, and therefore creates less power. The reason that there are higher octane gasses are for different compression ratios in engines and climates. 87 octane is fine until 10:1 compression aprox. in most situations.
To resist premature spontaneous combustion. You don't want it to detonate based on compression alone, you want it to detonate based on spark. If it detonates before TDC you're losing power and so forth.
With this said, 87 octane I doubt will be the best for 1MZ-FE's.
SEARCH for performance mods... They've been covered to death. There are a good dozen cheap ones that will get you into the mid 16s if you combine them.
1mz-fe's do "require" to "suggest" the use of 91 octane.
The car doesn't know the differance... All it does is detect pre-ignition. When it sees it, it retards the timing until it goes away, waits a very few seconds, and starts putting timing back in until it's back to base timing, or the pre-ignition comes back.
It's as simple as if you run 87 octane in your car, and there is no pre-ignition; your reasons for using higher grade gasoline are fairly well nullified.
Run the next tank out, pop the hood while your car is filling with 87 octane, and pull the EFI fuse out. Finish fueling, pay, put the fuse back & close the hood. Then drive the son of a bitch.
If there is mild pinging, never use 87 again. If you can't tell the differiance, you've been using the wrong gas for the life of the car, and should feel like a total dumbass

it recommends 91 for optimum performance....which means 87, 89 and your car will run just fine and have enuf power but i supose 91 would work better at the track.
just answer your own question...use 91 next time at the track and see if it makes a noticeable difference...i would guess maybe more than .5 sec.
there are no "cheap" mods...just look at the "performance chips" on ebay that will add 20+hp for $0.99
Cold Air Intake (custom or AEM, etc.), custom exhaust, and so on...building a quick and fast car is not quick or fast or easy and DEFINEATELY NOT cheap....just stay to the forums and you'll get there

I've noticed that the gen3 1mzfe accelerates faster on 91 as opposed to 87. You could try using octane booster, but I really don't know if that will work ... but doesn't hurt to experiment.
You should already know this but:
Turning the A/C off during runs will make a big, big difference (I turn it off on my 4 when merging ).
Inflate your tires to proper inflation, or at least proper inflation for the back tires.
also make sure u power brake...(don't drop it from neutral or else but u probably already knew that.)
turn of all accessories, remove EVERYTHING unnescessary from the car and even take out the back seat (the 'seat' part, just pull up on the front and it'll pop up).
