I'm assuming you are talking about the V6 with the A541E auto tranny. I think it is always best to dyno a vehicle in as close to a 1:1 gear as possible. With the A541E, 3rd gear is 1:1. However you'll have to find a good shop to run it. Trying to run an auto in 3rd, you have to take the RPMs up in 2nd further than most would like so it doesn't downshift when you get on the gas. Traction is also an issue. I've only found 1 shop that could do good 3rd gear runs for me. Many shops like to do 2nd gear runs so it isn't as stressfull on the engine and shifting is controlled (traction is obviously still an issue). The problem is you don't get a true hp reading and more importantly, it is better to tune where it'll be doing all that work. It's good to get a 2nd gear run for a sanity check to see A/F after the 3rd gear tuning is done. -JoeB

Cool

A540D, A540E, and A541E's all have a 1.000 ratio in third.

You can do it electrically btw. Ask Tony the Tiger how he wired his switch up, that way you can lock it into 3 and get the dyno from a very low rpm.

Can you just remove the kickdown cable?
Mine has the A540E. It has a cable that runs from the TB to the transmission, which I assume controls the gearing.

It controls the kickdown of the gearing. If you foot is fully depresed, WOT on TB, that cable will control the trans to kick back to either 1st or 2nd depending on your speed.
So...my question is...removing this cable would disable that kick down and hold the car in watever gear is selected..correct or not?

Cool

ECT is completely seperate from the kick-down cable. ECT swaps to a modified shifting logic.

When the cable is loose it will wait longer to shift, when it's tight it'll shift harder and downshift quicker. The problem I find many people are running into is that when the cable is adjusted too loose it tends to clunk around and hunt for gears.

Just PM TtT and ask him how he wired up his transmission hold switch... There are a few aftermarket (for other Toyota) shift controllers and none are complicated.

You could try running without it connected. Not like it's going to kill anything. It'll probably drive funny tho hahahaha Get it to about 30mph, back off so it goes into 3rd and floor it. Tell us what happens.

BTW are you sure 2vz's had a 540E, or did they have the 540D?

Yep..mines got the A540E. ECT 4 Speed Auto.

The ECT button does indeed control the shifting logic.
On mine this is the setup.
- Cable goes from accelerator pedal to the cruise control unit.
- Cable from Cruise Control Unit goes to TB.
- Cable from TB goes to transmission.
All a seperate cables.
The one from the TB to transmission, i thought, was the kickdown cable. So..depending on the amount of accleration/TB movement, the transmission will kick back to the correct gear.

I'd love to know how to 'lock' the trrans in wateva gear was selected with no kickdown. Ill PM Tony for that.
