get a escort passport 8500. i used to think that it didnt matter what detector you had. then my girlfriend got me a escort for my birthday and i have NEVER been pulled over since(knocks on wood). the escort gives me a good 30 seconds warning over my old cobra detector. i am one of those cheap bastards that wont spend anything on himself but im sure glad i got this as gift. otherwise i would never have known what i was missing.
its $300 but thats nothing compared to the overall cost of a ticket. just check out epinions.com and read the reviews.
It'll boil down to a passport 8500 or a Valentine One.
The Valentine One is superior, but costs $100 more.
Either way they're both good units.

Personally i think it's a waste of money. Sure you can spend 300 on one and it'll detect a few cops, but you also get false signals from buildings. Plus if the cop has a lazer gun, no 30 second warning can warn that. but yea 8500 is a good one if ur really set on buying one. My friend has one.
i have an escort x50 8500... gives great detection warnings... no laser is fool proof and city speeding is always kinda risky/dumb but it has cool features...
you can shut off the x band in the city, which cuts down lots of the mess signals, also it can track like 8 radar bands at once... picks up laser and pop
i think it is a great radar, plus you save $100 over the v1, my buddy has a v1 and seems the same but whatever you want those 2 are top of the line
if you buy a cheap radar, it is really throwing you money away, and radars are not a passport to speed as much as you want, i drive back and forth from my university to home once or twice a month, it is 6 hours round trip, and helps me stay away from a pointless ticket of 80 in a 65...
btw this should be in general discussion...

valentine one....and they're coming out w/ V2 (plus it's got the arrows that light to tell u what direction the detection is coming from (front, sides, rear)
i've really only noticed the detectors work very well on the highways (esp. at night) but they're all kinda iffy in the city (IMO)

i actually got rid of my V1 after testing the 8500
my vote 8500
fair enough it also depends ALOT on if the popo keep their radars on (one city here, most of all the cops drive with the radar on so it always detects them but alot just wait and turn it on...which if its at u then ur already screwed (possibly if were speeding)
personally i have an $80 cobra (i know it sucks compared to all u guys r recommending), its saved me quite a few times and not some others in town, but has always saved my ass on the highway...just depends if ur a hardcore speed or would just rather be safe (but none of us speed so y would we need one?

I have the Escort 8500 but I really want one that can detect behind me too because I've had various times that I see the cop behind me and as soon as he gets parallel or passes me then it goes off. So it seems to me it's only detecting ahead of me which is pointless if a cop behind is coming up fast.
