I just got my Camry from my grandmother (30k mi) and I plan on soupin it up. But all of a sudden the gears started to slip and the reverse gear is totally gone, its a 1993 le automatic w/ overdrive. I'm told this is a common problem with camry's and it will cost 1400-1800 to fix. Anyone else have this problem?

No I have not heard that your problem is a common one with Camrys. It does sound expensive to fix though.

You need to talk to Phi, our resident tranny expert. But that's pretty low mileage to have your tranny go dead. Most likely your gammy did short trips and probably did not change the fluid often.

The problem with Gen 3 transmissions is that they are very compact in size, so they are more prone to failure. Sounds like your flywheel thingy went dead...but they are pretty expensive to fix.

Check your tranny fluid levels/condition first before running out and getting a rebuild. As Silver mentioned, with that low milage, it's unlikely that the tranny is shot, unless your Granny was rushing home to get the ice cream into the freezer alot

I think it was the short trips. So far I went to greese monkey and got a full service and a torque flush. The reverse gear is still gone. Thinking about looking for estimates, what else can i do Only 17 in the game and no ride for the summer how weak is that
