Wouldn't it be much easier changing CV boots this way???

I am just curious. I'v heard people talking, when changing CV boots, it is so hard
to take off the driveaxles from differential housing due to the the rings holding it
back.

Well, I looked my car (96" Camry V6). I found that, at BOTH side, the half-shafts
are bolted to either a driveshaft or an intermediate driveaxle with 6 hex bolts.
If I release 6 bolts, would that be much easier to take the half-shafts off
since I don't have to touch the shafts (or intermediate shafts) that are connected
to the differential box?

See the fig 7 here:
http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d8015759b.jsp

NOTE: I am talking BOTH sides. Haynes manual only recommends doing it this way
on the driver side, but not on the passenger side (it recommands taking the whole
thing out). I don't see why.

Doing this way will not require drain the differential fluid, correct?

Thanks,

-shan

That is the way I did it on my 95 v6 le

Just make sure you have an impact wrench and a socket type hex (I forget the size) cause those bolts are in there tight

I found this much easier than pulling the entire shaft out.

I just replaced the boots themselves and put it back together

Thanks for reply. So you did it that way on

the passenger side without taking off the intermediate shaft?

Haynes manual seems to stressed that doing that way of that side will
make it extreemly hard to put the half-axle back. Is that so?

Question for you: how to you get impact wrench, rent it? What does the cost
look like?

Thanks,

-shan

There are two versions of drive shafts, one like the bolt on type you have and the other that have to be removed from the transaxle differential.

Thanks for reply. So, I guess I might be lucky that

I might be able to do that easier way for my car.

The only thing I am not sure is that Hayes manual stressed that
if I do that on the pessager side, it will be extreemly hard to put
it back (and the manual is specifically talking about 96 Camry v6).

From what I observed from my car, I don't see both sides should have any
difference in doing the simpler way.

Thanks again.

on teh 95 v6 le I didn't have any problems doing both side the same way (easier way)

A buddy of mine has an impact wrench so I just borrowed it, and him, and his air compressor. Only cost me buying him some dinner later that night

dont use an impact wrench on the hex bolts.. you may strip them, i stripped 3 this way on an old 92. use a breaker bar and extensions... your torque will be much safer than the impact gun's torque

With a breaker bar, is there enough

room to get around? I saw the space there is pretty tight.

Thanks,

thats why you need extensions... use the socket extensions to get it in there, then once you break the seal, then you can use whatever you want to get them off... you just want to break them loose with steady force, not the air gun's rough repetitive shocking force. that will more than l.ikely open up at least one of the hex heads. then you will be stuck getting the whole axle off... like i said... i had to do that on an old 92 that was rusted up a little.
