Oxygen Sensor P0135 Code

Need your advice on my Gen 4 98 Camry V6. I had the check engine light (CEL) come on and after shelling out $55 to a dealer for a diagnosis scan. I was told that I have the P0135 code:

P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

I was told that I need to replace the O2 sensor 1 on bank 1 in my (all stock) Gen 4 98 Camry V6.

I read several posts debating where this Bank 1 Sensor 1 is located. Is this the one in the front of the car towards the hood? The Haynes book shows a 4 cyl so I think that is correct but some forum posts here say that Bank 1, sensor 1 is by the firewall. Any advice?

How do you know if you have a California emission?

Also, how does the 4 wire housing disconnect from the computer as I can't seem to disengage?

I have read here that many ppl here replaced their O2 sensors yet still have issues. What other issues should I look for? MAP vacuum intake line cracks?

Thanks in advance.

4th Generation O2 Sensor

Camry03, thanks for the info. Did replacing the firewall side O2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) fix your P0135 code or did you have any other issues related to emission control/intake at all?

Was your fix to your 98 V6 free under warranty?

Regretably, I am in Canada so I don't have access to free diagnostics. Dealer wants $250 for the part and another $90 for labour to replace it

Maybe I should drive it down south for warranty work???

Replacing the O2 sensor did take care of the light and i did not have any other issues.

Umm.. i actually changed the sensor last month when i had about 68,000 miles so there was no warranty at that time. I usually do my own repairs.

That 250 for the parts is crap b/c i went to an autozone and picked up a univeral sensor for about 80ish. I really dont know anything about Canada but try to go to some auto parts store and see how much an O2 sensor is. If possible you could probably fix it urself its not that hard..... to me its just like changing out the sparkplugs back there.

CamryDriver03, did you access the Bank 1 Sensor 1 O2 sensor by the firewall by working from the top of the engine or did you do it by hoisting the car and accessing it from underneath? I trust it came out easily enuf without

I read some ppl had issues w/ universal or aftermarket sensors so I am inclined to stay OEM. Good to hear yours worked okay. Did you hafta rig the 4 wires or did the have the same OEM housing system? The part is 89465-06100 from what the dealership is telling me.
You used Bosch for $80??? Damn.

Hell I may drive down and buy one stateside and get it installed there since it is so much cheaper.

Thanks again.

Hey sorry for the slow response, i was bz.
anyways i got access to the sensor from the top by the drivers side. It actually took me awhile to try and take it out bc i didnt have wrenches long enough for leverage. But other than that it was actually easy.

I bought the universal O2 sensor and i had to connect wires. I had to cut the wire harness from the old O2 sensor and put it on the new one but it wasnt hard there was instructions. BTW the oem sensor (the one w/o cutting wires) will run u about 150ish and maybe u can find it online. I remember finding it online while searching the forums.

U know what i think is gay?? no one posted on ur question but me..... lol maybe they would have said "use the search button"

Later

CamryDriver03,

Thx again for your help. I did a search b4 posting and found alot of inconsistancies re: the actual location of the Bank 1 Sensor 1 which made me apprehensive about trying anything solo. I also called a few dealerships too and they confirmed the firewall location. They want $70 or more for just the labor. and as you say $130ish for the OEM part. Last thing I want to do is damage the Emission/Exhaust system to try and save some $$$.

So I will get a OEM and try it like you did. Thanks for the inspiration as I am mechanically challenged... won't get into the damage I did on other stuff

BTW, I luv Houston... there are so few stock cars out there as everybody dresses their cars w/ mags and tunes them up.... nice.

Thx again.

Braun-

Did you ever make the repair? Did you do it yourself? Did it work? Did your CEL stay off?
