3rd Generation Muffler

I am about to start making a custom muffler for my camry. The stock unit is burnt out and rattles constantly, time for a change. My question is, should I post a DIY or photos of it all, or does anyone care? I'm not sure how long it'll take, I estimate until about mid-march.

Oh, and what design would work best, straight-through or a baffled muffler. I'm leaning toward straight-through, but I don't want that loud pea-shooter sound that accompanies them.

You have a manderal (sp?) bender and welding tools? If so, then I'm jealous.

Modify your stock. Nothing meaner than a stock looking performance unit.

^^what he said. try out a search, within the last few months there was a thread in either the general or hardcore forum about making your own muffler, it turned out to be pretty sick

We modified a 'stock' muffler on a car using a welder, bits of scrap metal and steel wool! Opened it up like a patient..operated on it and welded it shut! Was so much fun..creating your own 'sound'. The steel wool acted like fibreglass packing does..not as good tho. It was a semi offset baffled muffler design in the end with perforations in it. Had a deep and loud sound, but got a tad raspy at the top end. Did 2 identical ones coz this was for a Ford 351.
Id say go for it mate..even if it doesnt sound the best..its your creation..just keep modding it till you get it like you want it.
Good thing to do is research different packing materials. I commonly see fibreglass being using in off the shelf mufflers..so that could be your best bet to follow suit..but if you wanna try something different..find out about other materials and there packing density. As I said, we used steel wool (like the stuff you use when washing your dishes ).

Yea I read the post in the hardcore tech section, and sat around with my grandfather (mechanic) and auto teacher and designed what I think will be a "interesting" sounding one. I should post some pics over the next few days with the progress.

No I don't have a mandrel bender, I'm gonna boro it.
