Just an uniformed suggestion here, that others might comment on, thinking you have an automatic.
The transmission locks in park, there is some kind of lock pin.
If the vehicle is moving and you put it in park, it will click until it slows enough for the pin to lock up the tranny.
Reverse is close to park, wonder if your linkage cable needs to be adjusted?
