I was just wondering, if you have an exhast leak at the flex pipe can it make a car fail emmisions. Since the exhast isn't going through the CAT and muffler. Here is MA, they just hooked my computer to the emmsions machine. But I was wondering if they actually hook up my exhast to the emissions computer, if my car will fail.

Well today I got the bad news from the Toyota Dealer that I need a flex pipe with cat.. and on top of that, I have a Calfornia Emissions on my Camry. Wierd huh?
I have a 99 Camry V4, 2.2L Sedan - with California Emissions.
Toyota wants 1200$ for Toyota... or AfterMarket for 945$.
This is outrageous. Can someone steer me in the right direction?
I've spent enough on the car, I don't want to spend anywhere near 600$ for a freaking pipe with a CAT.
Any help would be appreciated.

PS - Its very loud...and I could see when it was up on the lift, that the pipe broke at the spring/mesh.
bring it to an independent exhaust shop and they should be able to do that for I dunno...probably around 300? probably less.....the guys in the states would know more about the price....
and if your car is smog legal in cali, but you don't live in cali, then don't worry about it.
I think the cams in cali came with an extra o2 sensor or something along those lines? it wasn't drastically different...
but long story short, find out why its so expensive...is the cali standard cat different or something? all you need is a regular cat and flex pipe
oh, and you have an i4, not a v4...to get a v, you need at least 6 cylinders

I fixed my flex pipe.. as I said in my previous post, Toyota wanted to repair the entire pipe, when only one part was bad (the spring/mesh part). Well, I asked around locally, and someone fixed my flex pipe for 125$ US.. when Toyota wanted to charge 1200$ US, or 945$ After Market.
So my good news is good news for all of you. If you have a break at the spring/mesh part in your Toyota Camry flex pipe, that particular part can be removed and replaced at a HUGE savings, and your flex pipe doesn't need to be full replaced (only works if your flex pipe breaks in that area, and the rest of the pipe and exhaust system is in good condition).
Again. Flex pipe repair costs me $125.00 compared to $1200.
Thanks to someone who wanted to fix the problem, and not charge me for an entire flex pipe.
Happy..and I hope this helps others. I will not go back to a Toyota dealer to fix my 1999 Camry from now on.. they charge way too much, and the parts are very, very expensive, thats why Camry today is 30,000$ US.

Great info, I've been searching about replacement cats since my flex pipe went out about a week ago. I found the same info, I was quoted at roughly a grand for the front pipe and cat. The cat's fine, but the flex pipe just blew out.
Bringing this TTT for anyone who needs to replace their catalytic convertor on their Camry...
