changing spark plugs

My first post...I have a 2002 Camry LE (4 cyl) with 95,000 miles. I want to change the spark plugs but can't even see them! I'm assuming they're at the back of the engine and I'll have to remove the plastic valve cover to get to them. How difficult a job is this? Should I just let the dealer do it (at over $100 for changing 4 spark plugs!)? Thanks for any info.

DIY, buy new plugs, use them to get 3/8 drive socket, 6-8" extension and a ratchet. Pull the plug wires and replace.

^ what he said....

unless you have a v6 where it's a bitch and a half to get to the sparkplugs in hte back of the engine under the intake plenum, you have no excuse to not to them yourself

those cheap spark-plug changing kits with the ratchet and extensions actually help a lot...

Anyone got a pic of this "plastic engine cover". Every 5SFE i've seen has the 4 wires right there on top of the valve cover. I Must be missing something!

That's what I'm thinking, maybe he has a V6?

Those wires that go into the valve cover goes to the spark plugs. Pop those out and then use the socket wrech with an 8" adapter to unscrew the spark plugs.

95k on a 3 year old car? someone's been doing alot of driving! when you replace them, make sure to not cross thread the plugs, and put some anti seize greese on. it isn't much fun when you have to struggle forever cause they're stuck.

No shit shirlock..i wasnt doubting the sparkplugs and the leads..just the cover that goes over them. Much like the 3VZ and 1MZ..which have plastic covers over the entre thing to neaten it all up. I didnt think the 5SFE had a cover like that, I thought it would be like the 3SFE.

Guys,
My car is a 4 cyl. The plastic cover on the top of the engine has V V T- I on the top. I just checked again and it appears that the plugs may be under this plastic cover. There are 2 rubber grommets and 2 hex nuts holding the cover on. Guess I remove those to remove the cover. Yep, I drive around 2,500 miles a month. Thanks to all for the input. By the way, my owner's manual doesn't help much.

It's a DIY job, you should find it easy.

Re: plugs - most people in this forum recommend staying with platinum NGK's. I've tried Bosch and didn't find them good, so I'll go back to the recommended.

See you drive as much as me

I would suggest looking at Iridium sparkplugs which should increase your preformance and gas mileage.

he has a 2azfe, and not a 5sfe. 2002 is when camry platfom started using the 2.4 and not the 2.2s(5sfe). I hope this solves your questions...

oldgoalie - get a haynes manual; get denso-platinum's and genuine totoya wires. Looks like your not into modding cars too much, the above mentioned list should do suffice for you, you don't need to go aftermarket wires (magcore, etc) if you don't really want to. But whatever you do, DONT GET BOSH plugs. They decrease our mpg's. You don't need iridium plugs, as your not a v6 and looks like you don't have plans for modding.
