Wrap your Alternator, Distributor/coil packs, any exposed wires, and your throttle body in Aluminum foil. Then spray it down

Simple Green or Armoral Brand. I use Armoral engine cleaner personally. The stuff works great and eats away at dirt right after you spray it on.

I just pretty much wrap any sensors or wires I can really get to. You can always use an interior cleaner to clean them up.

Of course you include the essentials like battery, alt, dist, etc.

wrap any exposed electrical objects with a plastic bag with a rubber band and start cleaning.

I do not wrap any electrical parts, as I am sure they are splash resistant.

I usually do this after an oil change which I have driven the engine warm before hand.

I use a gentle spray (fan like) to wet down the engine bay and then spray simple green on. I use a 2 inch paint brush to work at dirty areas, and then rinse.

I do not do this in the winter.

If you got a open filter, cover that up. Next thing is spark plug boots. They're splash proof but not water tight. Hoseing them directly will fill the tube with water and cause misfiring. Put some cloth, towel around the boot to prevent water from going in and avoid spaying them directly.

I wrap in plastic bags, mind you i do this at home when the engine is COLD, on a heated engine, the bag would melt. (things covered, filter, battery, fuses, where oildip stick is, trannt dipstick, and i put a rag on the belts to absorbe any water...

I wash down my engine several times a year with a garden hose. I always do it on a cold engine only. I don't wrap anything and have never had a problem. What do you think is happening to your engine when it is raining oustside and you are driving your car at highway speeds? Do you think all the components are staying dry? Just my 2 cents.

Cool

Everything not electronic or ferrous.
Don't wash it if the engine is, or is going to be warm in the near future.

I'll save you some time.

If it has rubber or plastic anywhere around it, you don't need to be messing with it.

i think that washing your engine has more negative effects then leaving it alone. i live in ri with all kinds of crap on the roads and NEVER washed any motor i have had in any car. i understand that it helps with heat dissapation and stuff, but like i said i never washed any engine and all my toyotas have ran tip-top.

however if you must wash it then i would use a rag and simple green. notice how i didnt mention the hose or water.

just my $.02
