3rd gen shifter base...

Will a third gen Camry shifter base work with a E153 transmission from a V6 Camry or Solara provided I use the V6 cables? It seems that the shifter base is the same in 3rd and 4th generation Camry's i-4 or V6. Is this true? I have searched and this seems to be the conclusion I have drawn but it would be nice to hear it confirmed by a senior member...

i'm no senior member by any stretch, but i have done a lot of short shifter work in the gen 3... in my experience, the bases are similiar enough to use, however they may require small modifications to get them to fit the car. the cable systems are the same and should work just fine though.

I used a 4th gen in my 3rd gen. The base was a little different and some cutting was needed. They bolt up. I would figure it could go the other way.

Well it doesn't matter to me if I need to make it fit but I was curious whether the shifters have different throw lengths on the cables or anything. In other words, does a gen 3 shifter base push one cable a little farther each gear change than a gen 4 shifter base or whatever. What I know so far:

1. The 4th gen shifter needs to have material removed to make it fit in a 3rd gen. Therefore it stands to reason that the 3rd gen shifter base will fit into a gen 4 easily probably without much modification.
2. Shifter cables seem to be the same basically with a few slight differences like needing shims to fit an E153.
3. E153 found in Camry/Solara V6 will bolt up to 3S-GTE and hold the power.
4. Regular Camry clutch pedal and master cylinder will work with the E153 from Solara and Camry V6.

UFOs and I noticed the throws for my gen 4 were shorter than his gen 3.

the length of the lever itself won't make a difference because the cable that you have attached will only move so far anyway. that's how the shifter throws are shortened when you add the short shifter.

Makes a lot of sense, thanks.
