Oil extractor pumps

Does anyone here do oil changes using an extractor (AKA fluid evacuator, etc.)? Any opinions on this method? I haven't heard it mentioned much on this forum...

I've done this twice using a MityVac on my i4 Gen4. It takes 5-10 min to suck out the old oil. The i4 gen4 is the perfect car for this; the dipstick and oil filter are right up front. You just stick the tube down the dipstick hole and suck out the old oil, change the filter, and add new oil. [The possibilities for innuendo...]

It's great for "stealthy" oil changes; nice when you don't have your own garage. I do mine at night in the parking lot at work.

Besides the MityVac (http://www.mityvac.com/) I also know of Pela (http://www.pelaproducts.com/).

OTOH it would be silly to do it this way if your oil filter is underneath the engine.

Well, I have not tried this but would consider which may be my opinion.

One item, does the extractor get the same (more or less) oil out? I would base my decision on that. if it is so simple, then you should not have to worry about sludge either.

I know the VW TDI crowd love the mityvac as their filters are on top (cartridge type), and the vac gets all the oil out.

I use a drain valve on my drain bolt, to speed things up. and periodically do open the drain bolt to see if it has any larger particles.

I get out as much oil as the Haynes manual says is in the oil pan... One day I'll try the drain plug after using the pump.
