Today i was driving pretty fast (80mph) when the lady infront of me decided to come to a complete stop. i had to slam on my brakes but after 2secs i felt metal rather than the "braking" feeling. i took my foot off and pressed it again and it was back. does something get damaged during that? its only been around 4000 miles on 05, so i dont want to ruin the life of the brakes.
side note here: on my 00 camry this happened 3-4 times and the last time it happened was when i had the accident. a guy cut infront of me, and i pressed the brakes but i got the metal feeling and just slide and hit him.
does this happen to you guys? and will getting some brembo brakes help this situation?
Does your car come with Anti-Lock brakes? because that feeling could be your brakes pumping to keep your wheels from locking up.
And if you dont have ABS, it could just be your wheels locking up. I have the same feeling in my car when I hit the brakes. I dont have ABS and if I hit the brakes too hard, the wheels will lock and I get this strange feeling (Kinda like what you described.)
P.S. dont worry about using your brakes or pressing too hard. If you gotta stop, THEN STOP. Its better to use the brakes like they were intended to; and save your car AND yourself from damage that will cost a hell of a lot more than the brakes (And if you know how to change 'em yourself Which aint too hard, it will cost you around $75 and 1.5 hours.)

That's ABS working. Next time, try down shifting even if you have auto. That'll help stop the car faster. Don't worry about shifting wrong, the auto won't down shift and overrev the engine.
'05's have Vehicle Skid Control and Brake Assist, to go along with their ABS.
60-0 braking distance : 125 ft
Most newer sedans are doing 60-0 in 125' to 135'. Most higher end Toyota models have ben sub 135ft for more than a decade now.
Don't fear the brake pedal pulsating, and pushing back on you. ABS is just detecting wheel lock-up and releasing them for a split second. It definately beats trying to modulate them yourself.
With a good set of pads, and rotors, if you hit the brakes hard enough at 70+, you would feel the ABS start working by 55-60mph. That's pretty much where the traction limit is on tires around 195-225 in size with a typical load for the tire used.
Just keep your foot pressed down and point the car where you want to go. The computers will sort the tricky shit out for you.
