Just pick a good looking manual shift know and boot. take off the stock shifter and put the boot over the lever. Then put the shift knob on. Start the car and push the knob all the way down until you can move the shifter into different gears (park to reverse, neutral, etc) and tighten down the set screws. Then you need to pull the plug on the shift lock solenoid and mess with it a little. I also disabled the function where you hold down the brake to turn engine over. Now you make the shift boot fit with a little fiddling and thats that. Looks like a manual but heres how it should work. Car will only start in park or neutral. Shift knob can be put into any gear regardless of moving or sitting still so be careful. It will also shift even if the engine is off. (move car from park to neutral for example) You can put car into neutral going down a long hill and turn the engine off. Then at the stop sign at the bottom, start it and put it into drive again. It also makes the shifter half as tall as it was so it looks cool and is rather unique. Just be careful not to put it into park or reverse while moving down the highway lol. You sound kinda lame!!! But really, its not for everyone and it has its drawbacks I suppose. It has been on my car for 2 years now without any problems but I guess there could always be problems with modifications. I have never had a negative comment by anyone who has seen it in person but its all your taste. I cannot tell you what long term effects are since I am swapping in a manual transmission this fall anyways.
I would do that mod its just if I accidently knock it into reverse when I drive, im screwed. I have a tendency to drive with one hand on shifter because I was used to driving my dads vehicle, its manual.

Yeah like I said, not for everyone. I was terrified of that same thing but it has never been an issue. I drive with my hand on the knob though to keep it from getting bumped into reverse. The auto shifter knob looks cool though. Post up pictures when you get it in.
I bought a really crappy version of that on eBay a while ago for about $50, it was made of plastic, and it worked great for about half an hour...then I pushed the button down to shift into park, and some little plastic piece inside broke, rendering the entire thing useless. Unless you can get a good quality metal one, don't bother with it, as they're not reliable (at least in my experience).
Anyway, it has directions to install it, and no, it wouldn't cause the non-locking thing, you push down the big button in the middle, and then you can shift. It looked cool while it was installed though
that is a copy of the OBX tomcat shifter
it should say obx type r on it. like mine above.sorry for the glare its drak and had to use the flash.
mine works fine and works like an auto should.it was a little trick hocking up the OD button tight place.
i have that one that comes off ebay, its funny cuz it says razo on it but im damn sure its not. but it looks cool and works really well. eventually ill buy a nice one if can come up with the money. i cant go back bc of the cut shifter rod. ill be damned if i have to buy a new shifter system. here's a pic
