3rd Generation Engine revs really high on start up....

(1996 camry 5sfe) Sorta interesting... for the past couple weeks, every other morning or durring the day or at night sometimes, i'll start it up, and like normal cars, it'd rev a little past 1000rpms... well huh, when i turned the key over, it did that, but revved up to 2500rpms, then revved down to 1000 then back up to 2000 rpms, then back and forth and went back to normal...

huh.... i do have a short ram intake, no idea why it'd do that...

BUT... i dont know if this would account for it, the car is coming really close to getting an oil change, if in fact, i believe i passed the oil change time... i checked the oil... it was a full quart low and dark black... would that also explain why it would get really bogged down when i'd hit the pedal to the floor? i almost got into an accident the other day cause the car didnt do what it normaly does...

i should also say, the valve covor by the fuel injector is leaking oil...

My car goes up to 2000RPM until it cools. That's just how it's always been. Runs fine to me, so it doesn't seem like that big of a problem.

I have never heard of that before. Going a little over on an oil change is not that bad. It would take 1000's of miles past change to make the oil turn to sludge an that would just kill the motor not make it rev higher.

Engine Rev at start up?

I read somewhere that a faulty IAC valve can cause engine rev up at start up. May be worth checking it out. Good luck.

Does the car run fine after it's warm? If it does, than I think it's nothing to worry about

But I believe that is a Toyota device which uses engine temp to help judge idle. And when it is so cold, it revs it higher to heat the engine faster.

The idle should never go above about 1200 rpm thru the IAC or idle up. A cold start at 2500 could definitely do damage to the engine. I still have trouble getting used to the 1800rpm start up of the gen9 rollas.

The cause could be many things, but egr/vacuum leak might be a good place to start. It could be the ecm acting up, but you probably don't want to here that.
