Why couldn't I take on this ford probe?

I don't know where to post this so I guess I'll post it here, since I drive a camry. OK well anyways, I was driving home from work, when I notice one of my friends that I haven't met in a long time. We start talking, and I go, "Do you wanna race?". He says yes...

He drives a 96' Ford Probe SE - manual. (Stock with just a muffler)

Look at my sig, im stock - auto..

ok well.. we race from a stop on the back roads of an airport. No pedestrians/ cops/ or any cars for that matter. If you know Portland, and you street race this is the same place.

Anyways, this is pretty much my first time I've actually raced the cam. So anyways. were at a light, and it turns green and he just pulls on me, about half a car, and he continues to slowly pull from me...

I shut down at about 90..

Anywyas, edmunds.com says the his probe is 118hp / 127ft/lbs tq. It weights 2700lbs. i-4.

I don't understand why I can't take him, seeing that I'm a V6 with 188hp 203 lbs tq.. now I know this is just crank hp, but regardless.. why couldn't I have kept up with him? I weight heavier, and I'm an auto, but that shouldn't make me that slow. I've searched forum after forum, the auto cam makes 146fwhp < auto. < stock...

Also my mileage shouldn't have nothing to do with the performance, because my uncles camry, which he never ever drives, that has 40K miles doesn't even come close to driving as strong as my cam. And we both have identical cams, same color/year.

So whats up?

edmunds doesnt say anything about a v6 probe. And I'm pretty sure it was a i-4.

EDIT: He told me it was an i-4

Because Camry's are slow Milage can have an effect but gearing also has an effect. Auto = 4 gears which means steeper ratios than a 5 speed. I am not to familiar with the powerband of the 1MZ FE motor but it might only make 188 hp at a very high rpm, in short, a 5 speed has less parasitic loss and allows the driver to keep the engine in its powerband for longer.

I think Probes are RWD too, but I'm not sure. RWD = more push (effective weight transfer)

^^No they are FWD, they were suppose to be the replacement for the mustang when they came out. Ford wanted to replace it with an FWD car for some strange reason, but never did. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, maybe I'm remebring wrong.

the problem was as you said- you've never "raced" your cam before.

with the auto, you have to know your car even more than a stick, I've found.
back in the day, I lost in my car to a my friend's gen3 i4???

identical cars, but I've got the 6???

and yeah...this thread's gonna get locked...

Agreed. I was searching for that before I posted, but couldn't find anything.

Also why would this thread get locked? It does pertain to camrys.

thread's definitely going to get locked, but if you ever try to do legitimate racing, a good technique to practice with an auto in going from a stop is powerbraking...

when you pull the e-brake and hold down your pedal-brake with your left foot and floor it. you'll probably rev to 2-3k. when you're ready to go, just release both brakes and sit back for the ride.

he probably beat you from the launch.

Hey hey, street racing is bad...even when you do it in the most remote place. One car loses control, hits a pole, and it takes 20 minutes for an ambulance to find ya. There's one great story like that on the net, fortunately the other racer didn't leave the guy to die.

And locked.
