I am not an expert, but I have always been told that there is AT LEAST 10% tolerance built into the recommended 60K service. Meaning that if you went to 66k it should be fine, BUT if the belt brakes toyota is not liable because 'they told you in writing to change it at 60k'.

My buddy rode his plugs and timing belt in his 95 LE V6 until 88k and never had a problem (other than a small drop in gas mileage). I was too worried about it and had mine all changed at about 64k.

For long trip, wouldn't you want to enjoy better gas milage with the recently maintained fresh oils/tranny flushes/platinum plugs! If your going to pay now or later, might as well do it before the trip so that your trip is efficient and your mind without a doubt! But 60K doesn't mean its going to die at 61K. Just as long as your visually check your oil+tranny fluid colors, the rest should be fine - ITS A TOYOTA!

The timing belt should last longer than 60,000. I think mine made it past the 100,000 mark (105k I think it was). I wouldn't recommend letting it go THAT long though. I had the unfortunate nightmare of having my belt go out in one of the busiest intersections in my area, 20min before I had to be at work Not only that, if the timing belt actually breaks, I guess it's pretty much standard procedure to replace the water pump along with it.

If you do want to replace the plugs, I do have a recommendation. Autozone should have some "Platinum 2" spark plugs. They're a little extra but they come pre-gapped and they give a better spark than the regular platinums.

I'm currently at 63,2xx miles and haven't don't anything as far as service for 60k miles yet. I was told about a year ago while at 60,5xx that my air filter and plugs were fine. But maybe as a precaution i'll pick up some of those platinum 2 plugs. A timing belt and water pump job would be too expensive right now and I doubt i'll put that many miles on the car in the next year to worry about changing them both. (except for my move with the family from NY to Fla in a few months.) Also have a few small things to fix which my procrastination will probably prevent me from doing:

-Torque Mount (Dogbone Mount)
-O2 Sensor
-Rear Swaybar Bushings
-Fuel Filter

If you already have platinums, you don't really NEED to replace them. They're meant to outlast your car. I just did it cause I figured there was already so much money going into the engine, what's a few more bucks? Plus I got them on sale Autozone was out of the regular platinums so they gave me the platinum 2's for that price

If i'm not mistaken I think toyota might have told me that out of 4 only 1 of them was a platinum plug and the rest were different.

Then in that case, all i would recommed are:
1. Air element replacement (aka air filter)
2. Transmission Flush (not to be confused with Transmission drain and fill)
3. Brake Flush (get soem fresh fluids there).
4. Pour in some 'concentrate' fuel injector cleaner in your gas w/ every oil change!

WOLLA!

One thing you can think about when it comes time for 60k services. The Totyota powertrain waranty is 5 yrs or 60k miles. If you take it in before that warranty expires and there are warrantable items to be repaired you can get those done at no charge. This can include water pump, crankseal, cam seal, oil pump seal, and the timing belt tensioner and idler. I know around here most of the Toyota dealers run specials for T-belt replacement. ON 4cyl usually costs less that $200 for the belt and labor. When I was working for the Toyota dealer here in Nashville we used to do the warranty repairs all the time after we got in to do the belt and found those other things wrong. There are other things that may be covered that you could get taken care of also . Like I said this only applies if the vehicle is still under the powertrain warranty. So if you bought the car used to you need to find out the original in service date so you know if you got any time left.
