3rd Generation i'm just not smart

what's goin on?

well today i decided i had to change my oil.. it was pitch black... so i'm doing my normal oil routine of struggling with the oil plug and the filter.. and then i replace the filter.. get my camry all topped off... even put the oil cap on.. glance down at one of my OLD oil "jugs" and notice it says 10w-30... hmm... that's funny i never really checked to make sure the weight when i bought it at walmart this time.. so i look down at the new jug and what does it say? 10w-40....

ugh so does this mean i have to drain it? is alright to run on for a wihle? or is it a must-change situation? I've tried searching around and everyone has debated about the 5w-30 but i can't find any info on 10w-40... i know any oil is better than no oil.. i just need to know if i should replace it or if it's not really a huge deal... thanks

btw i'll check the weight from now on

don't worry...

the 30 and the 40 just means how much heat the oil can absorb, where the 5 and the 10 means the viscocity of the oil

just don't do what I did before last year....thought it was going to get warm, put in 15w50, and then it got cold again down to -30 overnight....

my engine took a beating whenever I started it for about 2weeks....

You're now into Spring over in the US, so 10/40 is fine. No need to drain the oil. Viscosity is the same as your previous oil.
