I'm planning to buy a 1999-2001 Camry. I want the car to come with ABS but I'm not sure how I can tell if the car has it? Can anyone give any input? Is there supposed to be a light when you key-on the ignition?
Find an open parking lot...drive about 30 mph....slam on the brakes...if you feel the pedal pulsating you have abs, if you dont have it you will have 2 laong black skidmarks

if you open up the hood, theres something underneath there that will show that you got abs....but i'm too lazy to find a pic of the engine bay and pointing it out...
but its on the left side and looks like a boxy metal thing near the engine coolant i think... ???
but also you can take out the one of the rear tires and if it has drums, it probably doesnt have abs.....disc brake = got abs.. (on 4 cylinders)
or you can pull the fuse box out and see if you a abs fuse or not.. if there's a spot for it and no fuse in there you don't have abs... i guess there's an ABS light that goes on when u turn the car to ON w/o starting it first

I'm wondering why you would need to take off one of the rear tires in order to see if it has drums or not, unless it's too hard to take a peek through the rims or the steel rims with hub caps

Thanks for all the tips everyone. One camry I was looking at was supposed to have ABS but I didn't see any ABS light when the car was in the ON position and the rears were drum brakes. I'll make sure I go over all the signs on the next cars I look at (thanks for the pic under the hood!)
Yea, it's a good idea to check. They said my '95 had ABS, swore up and down it did.
BS As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot I floored it and slammed on the brakes right in front of the salesman, locked all four tires and skidded to a smokey stop. On the bright side, got the price lowered $1k

Yeah, the location of the actuator under the hood is the way to tell, also discs on the rear, and if you turn the front wheels and look in by the strut, you should see the abs sensor wire, it looks like a second brake line.
