4th Generation Car overheats, stalls and wont start.

Hi,
Today my 00 camry (61k miles) overheated, and then it stalled. When i realized temp gauge was pretty high up. So i parked it on a street (thankfully only 4 blocks away from my house). I looked under the hood, and coolant reservoir is empty, i opened up radiator cap and it seems radiator is emptied out as well. Later when engine cooled, i check engine oil dip stick suspecting coolant might have gotten inside the engine. Thankfully it looks like it didnt go inside the engine. Now when i try to start the engine, it makes clanking sound almost like tapping a empty bottle with stick kind of sound. It will roughly idle for 2 seconds and would stall out. What could be wrong here? it was dark of i couldnt throughly check everything. But if engine overheated and stopped, i should be able to start the engine and run it until it gets hot again. Any kind of help will be greately appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe your water pump locked up? Could have warped the head and blown the gasket too.

Where did your coolant go to? You must have a leak if its not in the oil.

Pretty sure the coolant resevoir is just for overflows and that your car won't use any of the coolant in there.

If you can go back to your pull over spot, check for traces of coolant. If no coolant can be found there or on your car (dried up, or what) then you might have been running without coolant since you say your dipstick seems to indicate good oil and no coolant in there. As Kooterskkar said, check the water pump as it is the next thing related to the cooling system that can go clank clank.

Big question: How long did you let the car overheat? If it spiked up to the red zone it means something burst open. If it slowly went there, it means there's a small leak somewhere. And if you let it stay in the red zone for a good while, you might have warped the head and coolant might have leaked inside. Double check to be sure.

thanks for the response. I brought nearby mech and asked him, he said water pump was blown. Kind of wierd since water usually never goes bad. So he told me to get timimg belt and water pump changed, i asked him if that didnt fix the problem i'm not paying for any additional charges. He said ok and my car is now in the shop. My car is giving me alot of troubles lately

Water pumps do go bad. They either leak, seize, or break.

My friend had a water pump that broke. The blade looking part on the inside of the pump broke off the shaft and the engine overheated.

I told him that I could tig weld the part back on.
