Is it too late to use synthetic oil now? 144k now, motor and tranny still good and running strong. I was hoping to run full synthetic mobil 10W30. Any advice is gladly appreciated. I got a 94 5sfe.
It's never too late. Synthetics are the life-blood. Use them. Should have been done 144,000 miles ago.
Please direct all future oil questions to the Bob is the oil guy website.

Oh there are times its too late and I wouldn't risk it. Your car has been running on dino oil for the duration of it's life and it still runs fine, why switch? Regular oil may have created some seals that may dissolve if you use synthetic and cause leaks.

nope... it just means you gotta change it between 3-4k anyway... my camry had like 136k on it when i put mobil syntec in it.... although the valve cover leaks, its 141k now and its like pretty dark looking oil... too bad the dealer ship was booked for 2 weeks straight for a damn oil change
Just replace all the oil seals and you can run synthetic with no worries. (its much better for old engines just not for old seals)
Also, AMSOIL has a drain interval of 25k miles, or one year. I had some test results I found online from someone who used that stuff and had the oil tested after 6 months. It was just fine. Just gotta change the filter every 6 months or so. Plus AMSOIL makes a bypass filter that will filter out particles as small as .1 micron. So you might spend 75 bucks on a case of oil and a filter, but you get 12 quarts, which makes 2 oil changes, and then some (if your car only takes 5 quarts). Or 3 changes if your car only needs 4 quarts at a time. Changing the oil 4 times a year with regular oil at about 20 bucks per change is 80 bucks. You only gotta do it once a year under normal driving with the AMSOIL. So it almost costs less to use synthetic. (as long as its not leakin everywhere)
Whether or not it will leak depends on how often the oil was changed before. If the engine is clean you wont have any problems, but if it had a bunch of gunk and sludge built up around the seals (from not being changed often enough) then switching to synthetic will clean out all that gunk and open up those potential leaks. If you dont have any leaks yet, after 9000 miles, its probably not gonna happen any time soon, if at all.
Thanks guys. I appreciate all the comments. I don't believe my seals are bad, I've been taken very good care of the car ever since I got it. I'll be using mobil 1 fully synthetic from my next oil change on.
I may very sell switch on my next oil change at 145,000 miles. will have a compression test doen first though.
I just had every extenal seal on my motor replaced except for the rear main seal, so i should be in good shape externally. internally i may be ok too, but thats what the compression test results should yeild.
