hey guys! i want to convert my car to manual, but i want to know if there is a gearbox from another toyota which has better gear ratios than the S53 found in gen2 camrys that will work? perhaps a celica 5 speed?
lately, there are too many people on TN now who think the e153 is plug and play with 4 cylinder engines... this is NOT true. to clear it up...
for gen 2 camry 4cyl:
use the s53 from the 3sfe manual
-stock everything fits
-get manual tranny passenger side inner axle
if you use the e153 from 92+ camry v6, you will need
-gen2 v6 hubs/steering knuckles
-gen 2 v6 brakes, calipers and discs
-gen 2 v6 drivers axle
-mr2 or alltrac 3sgte passenger side inner axle
-gen 2 camry v6 passenger side outer axle
-3sfe flywheel
-3sfe clutch pressure plate
-3sgte, yes 3sgte clutch disc & bearing
for gen 4 camry 4 cyl:
use s54 from 92+ 5sfe standard
-stock everything fits.
-get manual tranny passenger side inner axle
if you use the e153 from 92+ camry v6, you will need
-gen4 v6 hubs/steering knuckles
-gen4 v6 brakes, calipers and discs
-gen4 v6 drivers axle
-mr2 or alltrac 3sgte passenger side inner axle
-gen3, yes gen3 camry v6 passenger side outer axle
-5sfe flywheel
-5sfe clutch pressure plate
-3sgte, yes 3sgte clutch disc & bearing
with either gen you will need:
-the shifter assembly/base from 4 cyl or v6 manual same gen as your car
-shifter cables from 4 cyl or v6 manual same gen as your car
-clutch pedal from 4 cyl or v6 manual same gen as your car
-clutch master cylinder from 4 cyl or v6 manual same gen as your car
-clutch slave cylinder - same as whichever tranny you use.
-clutch hydroulic lines, make your own with braided SS lines or solid metal clutch/brake line and small tubing bender, or order the OEM parts from the toyota dealer for the same gen as your car and according to the engine - tranny does not matter in this case.
-you may or may not choose to change to the manual ECU, it doesnt matter, but if you dont get the manual ECU, you will see engine codes for shift solenoid malfunction (because there are no shift solenoids in a manual tranny)
hope this helps everyone. please do not spread invalid information about what fits in what car to other people. ONLY POST IF YOU KNOW FOR SURE WHAT WORKS!

Finally someone who clears that up....people don't realise that the E153 is a V6 box...and i think the only 4cyl it's mated to is the MR2 3S "GTE".... of course with reversed linkage...

But really, I'm no expert on MR2 just Celicas but since they share the same engine I'm guessing that the box should also change just like in the Celica.
