3rd Generation Good price? 68,000mi Maintenance...

Recently went in to fix the brakes that have been squealing for a while - the noise went away when you stepped on the brakes, but it was really annoying. Also did a tune-up and I was curious about the prices. Don't forget that this is Hawaii where everything is more expensive

- (Lube, oil, filter): Drain and refill oil, replace filter, lubricate chassis (if applicable), check tires and all fluid levels. $2.75 parts + $28.95 labor

- (Brake inspection): Check noise. Major brake inspection. Cleaning and adjustment. Rear disc brakes squeaking, RT rear rotor warped, pads worn unevenly. Rotate tires. $51.00 labor

- (Rear disc brakes): Replace rear disc brake pads, reset calipers and guides. R&R rotors for resurfacing. Check and adjust parking drumb brake assembly. Road test car. $94.80 parts + $187.00 labor

- (Tune up): Engine tune up as needed. Replace parts as listed. R&R as needed for access (V6). Check vacuum circuits and EGR. Road test car. Platinum park plugs $6.19 each x 6 = $37.14 parts + $170 labor

Also got a safety check, and there's the shop supply and disposal fees etc...

Total: $135 + $455 labor

He said that the fuel filter is most likely the original and so that needs to be replaced. He ordered the part and said it would be $125 including parts and labor. I thought that sounded expensive, so I called another service station and they told me $80 including parts and labor. Perhaps the second station looked up the price for the I4? Is there even a big price difference to do I4 vs. V6 fuel filter replacement?

The car has just about 68,000 miles on it and is still good as new!

You really don't need to change your spark plugs yet. I did mine at 100k and the plugs actually look fine (no carbon buildup or any of the usual systoms). Oil changes are piece of cake on our cars (oil filter are below the exhaust on the V6 engines). Changed my own brakes myself last fall for the first time after 135K. None of these maintainance is very difficult to do. I am not even very mechanically inclined. For the brakes, just apply the anti-squeel compound on the shims or back of the pads, and you will be fine. Good luck with your decision.

My opinion, for that kind car, you ONLY fix

what is wrong.

If you brakes squealing, check if it is the front or rear ones. Check
if the pads are worn out so that the warning brass piece is touching
the rotors. If so, change the pads. They cost $40 from dealers.

Believe or not my 96 V6 (68K miles as well) got the pads worn out
on the rear ones first while the front ones still have plenty.

Only fix what you need to. For spark plugs, I changed mine myself and
I found the original ones were still OK. The new ones did not make much
difference in driving. Since I needed to fix a valve cover leaking so I
changed them anyway.

Yes...labor seems to be on thie high side. I'll ask my cousin to see if he can do the oil changes and stuff. I need to ask him about the price, I'm hoping he can change the fuel filter for me. I'd rather pay him the $100 than the service station... Thanks for the input guys. Good to hear that your cars are still going great too!

Check with Mr. Saiki at Saiki Motors in Waipahu. He is honest and will only do what you want to replace or repair. He owns a couple of Camrys and is very familiar repairing Camrys. Main thing is he will do it right and won't rip you off. I take my Camry there whenever it needs repair. Good Luck!
