Torn CV Boot

I'm going to humble myself here and ask a question that will leave me feeling like a total newbie.
went to get my oil changed today and they mentioned that my c/v boot was torn, and recommended i get it looked at. the place i got my oil done at does not do auto repair, which leads me to believe that they were not just trying to get some money out of me by telling me that. what exactly is the cv boot and how much should i anticipate spending to get it fixed (so i know im not getting ripped off when i get estimates)

Constant velocity boot, right behind each front wheel. It's not that cheap to get done at a dealer (~$350). Look under the car and you should be able to see if it's torn. Looks like an accordian, or a beehive on its side.

It is something you want to take care of sooner rather than later.

I just had mine done last week. It takes about an hour to do. There are places that will do it for you for around 150, or if you can find a CV pro's they can just replace the boot for around 60 if you're lucky, ie the actual CV joint isn't destroyed. When you're turning does the car make a clunking or clicking noise?

you may be lucky enough to have caught the problem before it truely sets in. it is very easy, so ive heard, to just replace the cv boot cover. the cover protects the cv joint innards from rust and crap getting in. that process shouldnt be more than 50 to 70 depending on hourly wage. just make sure if there is no damage to the cv joint itself that they dont make you replace the whole unit.

Replacing the Boot cover will entail removing the Axle. You will be spending the labor portion of the work anyway. An aftermarket set of Axles (left & Right) will cost you $150.00. Labor of $100.00, if you get lucky.

$300 would be fair. This will good for the next 100,000 miles. How many miles do you have? Nothing critical, it will eventually start the "clunking noise." You have lost all your grease in the bearings...until that time, you will be fine. Did you notice that your fender wheel well is greasy?

Good luck.

If u don't get it replaced, u will run into my problem, in which i snapped my drive axel at the point inside the boot. It wasn't fun but it can be repaired.

for trustworthy work, if that 150 includes parts, I'd just stop there and get it done.

if you go to the dealer, it should be about 300max with oem parts, I think the boot only costs about 30 or 40 dollars, and as everybody says, the price is in the labor.

if they only charge less than 100 for labor, then they're doing something wrong or doing a shoddy job. as somebody mentioned, you have to remove the axle to put the boot on properly and that takes a bit of time

thanks for all the help guys - looks like i'll be getting this fixed tomorrow...yea the guy said they have to take off the axle to replace the boot, so i guess 150 for parts and labor sounds reasonable. rather spend that money now than a whole lot more later on. right now i have 206,000 miles on the car, to answer ur question

^ that'd be a rebuilt axle

and as said, the only real cost is the labor.
